Solid-State Electrochemical Assay of Heme-Binding Molecules for Screening of Drugs with Antimalarial Potential
2013
The interaction between heme and ligands is the basis for a variety of tests aimed at the discovery of antiplasmodial molecules. Two electrochemical methods for the screening of molecules with potential antimalarial activity through heme-binding mechanism are described. The first method is applicable to lipophilic environment, by using solution phase electrochemistry in DMSO solutions of Fe(III)-heme plus the tested compounds at carbon electrodes. This method provides well-defined voltammetric signals, characteristic of the heme-ligand (L) interaction. The second method involves aqueous media at biological pH and the use of voltammetry of immobilized particles, by means of microparticulate …

An electrochemical DNA biosensor for the detection of CTX-M extended-spectrum β-lactamase-producing Escherichia coli in soil samples
2013
International audience; An electrochemical hybridization assay involving neutravidin-coated carbon screen-printed electrodes and an HRP-based detection have been shown to provide an effective tool for the genotypic analysis of extended-spectrum beta-lactamase-producing E. coli strains in complex samples such as soil. Electrochemical corrosion assessment of RaCe and Mtwo rotary nickle-titanium instruments after clinical use and sterilization
2010
Aim: The aim of the present study was to electrochemically evaluate corrosion resistance of RaCe and Mtwo files after repeated sterilization and preparation procedures. Study Design: A total of 450 rotary files were used. In the working groups, 72 files from each file type were distributed into 4 groups. RaCe and Mtwo files were used to prepare one root canal of the mesial root of extracted human mandibular first molars. The procedure was repeated to prepare 2 to 8 canals. The following irrigation solutions were used: group 1, RaCe files with 2.5% NaOCl; group 2, RaCe files with normal saline; group 3, Mtwo files with 2.5% NaOCl; and group 4, Mtwo files with normal saline in the manner desc…
Electrochemical detection of chloride ions using Ag-based electrodes obtained from compact disc
2022
Abstract In this work electrochemical sensors fabricated from compact disc material (waste or new) are used to quantify chloride ions in different types of samples. All three electrodes, working, counter, and pseudo-reference electrodes, were fabricated from the compact disc and directly used. Different parameters were studied in order to demonstrate the possibility of using this waste material for efficient and low-cost electrochemical sensors. Chloride sensing performance was evaluated using linear scan voltammetry as the detection technique. A sensitivity of 0.174 mA mM−1 cm−2 with a limit of detection of 20 μM and excellent selectivity against many interferents was observed. Selectivity…
Electrochemical detection of dopamine with negligible interference from ascorbic and uric acid by means of reduced graphene oxide and metals-NPs base…
2021
Abstract Dopamine is an important neurotransmitter involved in many human biological processes as well as in different neurodegenerative diseases. Monitoring the concentration of dopamine in biological fluids, i.e., blood and urine is an effective way of accelerating the early diagnosis of these types of diseases. Electrochemical sensors are an ideal choice for real-time screening of dopamine as they can achieve fast, portable inexpensive and accurate measurements. In this work, we present electrochemical dopamine sensors based on reduced graphene oxide coupled with Au or Pt nanoparticles. Sensors were developed by co-electrodeposition onto a flexible substrate, and a systematic investigati…
Height as a potential indicator of early life events predicting Parkinson's disease: a case-control study.
2007
Aim of this study was to investigate the relationship between height in young adult age and Parkinson's disease (PD) risk. We included 266 persons affected by idiopathic PD. Patients were matched by age and sex to 266 controls by a random selection from the municipality of residence. We collected information about height preceding PD from official documents where these characteristics referred to young adult age (nearly 30 years). We compared height in cases and controls by calculating differences in mean distribution and by χ2 analyses. Crude and adjusted odds ratios (OR) and 95% confidence intervals (CI) were calculated by logistic regression models. Mean height was significantly lower in…
Photocatalytic ozonation under visible light for the remediation of water effluents and its integration with an electro-membrane bioreactor
2018
Abstract Photocatalysis and photocatalytic ozonation under visible light have been applied for the purification of a complex aqueous matrix such as the grey water of Masdar City (UAE), by using N-doped brookite-rutile catalysts. Preliminary runs on 4-nitrophenol (4-NP) solutions allowed to test the reaction system in the presence of a model pollutant and to afford the relevant kinetic parameters of the process. Subsequently, the remediation of grey water effluent has been evaluated in terms of the reduction of total organic carbon (TOC) and bacterial counts. The concentration of the most abundant inorganic ionic species in the effluent has been also monitored during reaction. Photocatalytic…
Electrochemistry as an Attractive and Effective Tool for the Synthesis and Immobilization of Porphyrins on an Electrode Surface
2014
Magnesium(II) 10-phenyl-5,15-p-ditolylporphyrin is easily and cleanly transformed by electrolysis. A nitro group is first introduced at the free meso position by anodic substitution. Hydrogenation into the amine is then carried out electrocatalytically under ambient conditions with water as a hydrogen supplier. The synthesized porphyrin under the nickel(II) form can be covalently grafted onto a platinum electrode by electrochemical reduction of the diazonium cation, generated in situ by a reaction of the nickel(II) aminoporphyrin with sodium nitrite and trifluoroacetic acid. The electrosynthesized thin film gives an electrochemical response typical of a porphyrin material. Films grown under…
Electrochemical oxidation of organics in water: Role of operative parameters in the absence and in the presence of NaCl
2008
The electrochemical oxidation of organics in water was investigated theoretically and experimentally to determine the role of several operative parameters on the performances of the process in the presence and in the absence of sodium chloride. Theoretical considerations were used to design the experimental investigation and were confirmed by the results of the electrochemical oxidation of oxalic acid (OA) at boron doped diamond (BDD) or IrO(2)-Ta(2)O(5) (DSA-O(2)) anodes in a continuous batch recirculation reaction system equipped with a parallel plate undivided electrochemical cell. Polarization curves and chronoamperometric measurements indicated that, in the presence of chlorides, the a…
