The Formal Redox Potential of the Ti(IV, III) Couple at 25 °C in 1 M HCl 2 M NaCl Medium

The formal redox potential of the Ti(IV, III) couple has been determined at 25 degrees C in 1 M HCl, 2 M NaCl aqueous medium, by emf measurements of a junction-free cell with glass and mercury electrodes. Ti(III) and Ti(IV) concentrations were changed by controlled electrolysis. The mean value of the searched formal potential, in a large range of total titanium concentration, is 9 +/- 1 mV against the molar hydrogen electrode in the same ionic medium.

Magnetic nanoparticles between electrodes of tunnel junction: anomalous tunnel conductance

Abstract Magnetic particles of microscopic size can be created in the process of Ni, Fe and Co mechanically controllable break junctions fabrication and trapped between the electrodes by magnetic dipole forces. Tunneling between the protruding nanoparticle and the sample electrode shows clear distinctions from the usual junctions: heavy deviation of the current–distance I(z) dependence from the expected exponential behavior at electrode separations z below 4.0– 4.5 A and on numerous occasions a sudden jump-like decrease of the tunnel current at z≈1.5– 2.0 A . Possible mechanisms behind observed anomalies including the short-range magnetic exchange coupling are discussed.

Multi-domain Feature of Event-Related Potential Extracted by Nonnegative Tensor Factorization: 5 vs. 14 Electrodes EEG Data

As nonnegative tensor factorization (NTF) is particularly useful for the problem of underdetermined linear transform model, we performed NTF on the EEG data recorded from 14 electrodes to extract the multi-domain feature of N170 which is a visual event-related potential (ERP), as well as 5 typical electrodes in occipital-temporal sites for N170 and in frontal-central sites for vertex positive potential (VPP) which is the counterpart of N170, respectively. We found that the multi-domain feature of N170 from 5 electrodes was very similar to that from 14 electrodes and more discriminative for different groups of participants than that of VPP from 5 electrodes. Vitamin A deficiency increases noise susceptibility in guinea pigs.

The effect of vitamin A deficiency in guinea pigs on noise-induced temporary threshold shift (TTS) was evaluated after short (15 min) acoustic overstimulation with a moderate (90 dB) broad-band white noise. Some guinea pigs were fed ad libitum a purified diet deficient in vitamin A (VAD group) until biochemical signs of deficiency occurred. A second, control group (VA group) received the same diet as well as 100 IU vitamin A daily by pharyngeal tube. Cochlear potentials were recorded by special computerized equipment using implanted electrodes. Interpretation of PEA Output Signal in a Multilayer Specimen

The aim of the present work is to evaluate the acoustic waves behavior within the Pulsed Electro-Acoustic (PEA) cell, in case of a multilayer specimen, in order to avoid misinterpretation of the output signal. Due to the reflection phenomenon of the acoustic waves travelling within the PEA cell, the output signal could be distorted. Because this aspect, for a given PEA cell with certain ground electrode and absorber thicknesses, depends on the sound velocity and thickness of the specimen under test, the latter must be carefully sized. Weakly nonlinear analysis of Turing patterns in a morphochemical model for metal growth

We focus on the morphochemical reaction–diffusion model introduced in Bozzini et al. (2013) and carry out a nonlinear bifurcation analysis with the aim to characterize the shape and the amplitude of the patterns arising as the result of Turing instability of the physically relevant equilibrium. We perform a weakly nonlinear multiple scales analysis, and derive the normal form equations governing the amplitude of the patterns. These amplitude equations allow us to construct relevant solutions of the model equations and reveal the presence of multiple branches of stable solutions arising as the result of subcritical bifurcations. Power monitoring in dielectric-loaded plasmonic waveguides with internal Wheatstone bridges

We report on monitoring the mode power in dielectric-loaded surface plasmon polariton waveguides (DLSPPWs) by measuring the resistance of gold electrodes, supporting the DLSPPW mode propagation, with internal (on-chip) Wheatstone bridges. The investigated DLSPPW configuration consisted of 1-μm-thick and 10-μm-wide cycloaliphatic acrylate polymer ridges tapered laterally to a 1-μm-wide ridge placed on a 50-nm-thin and 4-um wide gold stripe, all supported by a ~1.7-µm-thick Cytop layer deposited on a Si wafer. Kinetics of zinc anodic dissolution from the EIS characteristic points

A possible faradaic impedance function for the complex mechanism of metals electrodissolution across two consecutive electrotransferences has been developed in this work. The analysis of this function provides some characteristics points from which it is possible to calculate kinetic parameters of these processes. The dependence of these parameters on the potential has been studied in the case of Zn. These ones have been interpreted in terms of changes in the controlling stages of the overall rate of reaction. Properties of solid-liquid interfaces are of immense importance for electrocatalytic and electrochemical systems, but modeling such interfaces at the atomic level presents a serious challenge and approaches beyond standard methodologies are needed. An atomistic computational scheme needs to treat at least part of the system quantum mechanically to describe adsorption and reactions, while the entire system is in thermal equilibrium.
