A water-in-oil (w/o) microemulsion (ME) constituted by 15% Tris buffer, pH 8.4, in water and 85% sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS)/n-pentanol 1:4 mixture, capable of dissolving up to 30% vegetable oils and lard, was used as background electrolyte in reverse microemulsion electrokinetic capillary chromatography (RMEEKC). Owing to the free SDS ions in the continuous phase and some degree of percolation, the ME showed a high conductivity (0.65 mS. cm(-1) at 25 degrees C) and sustained a very stable capillary current. Thalamic Network Oscillations Synchronize Ontogenetic Columns in the Newborn Rat Barrel Cortex

Neocortical areas are organized in columns, which form the basic structural and functional modules of intracortical information processing. Using voltage-sensitive dye imaging and simultaneous multi-channel extracellular recordings in the barrel cortex of newborn rats in vivo, we found that spontaneously occurring and whisker stimulation-induced gamma bursts followed by longer lasting spindle bursts were topographically organized in functional cortical columns already at the day of birth. Gamma bursts synchronized a cortical network of 300-400 µm in diameter and were coherent with gamma activity recorded simultaneously in the thalamic ventral posterior medial (VPM) nucleus. Antimonic acid hydrate xerogels as proton electrolytes

Abstract Two high stability types of protonic solid electrolytes based on antimonic acid hydrate xerogels have been obtained by the sol-gel technique: Sb 2 O 5 ·(3–4)H 2 O (colloidal) and Sb 2 O 5 ·5H 2 O (polymeric). The first one is a white compact material with conductivity 0.40 mS/cm (298 K) for n =3.7. The last one is transparent for visible light with a conductivity of 0.80 mS/cm. An electrochromic system based on the colloidal gel electrolyte in the form of paste has good performance-more than 10 7 cycles and a lifetime of more than five years.

A short-circuited preparation of everted rat colon sacs is described. The serosal current electrode is a AgAgCl wire. A cylindrical agar bridge or AgAgCl electrode may be employed on the mucosal side. Effects of Ag+ ions liberated from the electrodes on ion transport could not be demonstrated. Fluid and sodium are absorbed and bicarbonate secreted. Potassium and chloride movements are not significantly different from zero. The preparation remains stable for at least 2 h. Sodium absorption is diminished by 50% and bicarbonate secretion abolished in the absence of glucose. In principle, similar ion transport properties were found as in Ussing-chamber preparations. We study the complex formation between one long polyanion chain and many short oligocation chains by computer simulations. We employ a coarse-grained bead-spring model for the polyelectrolyte chains, and model explicitly the small salt ions. We systematically vary the concentration and the length of the oligocation, and examine how the oligocations affects the chain conformation, the static structure factor, the radial and axial distribution of various charged species, and the number of bound ions in the complex. [EN] The rich and complex chemistry of tungsten was employed to synthesize innovative WO3 nanoplatelets/nanosheets by simple anodization in acidic electrolytes containing different concentrations of complexing agents or ligands, namely F- and H2O2. The morphological and photoelectrochemical properties of these nanostructures were characterized. The best of these nanostructures generated stable photocurrent densities of ca. 1.8 mA cm(-2) at relatively low bias potentials (for WO3) of 0.7 V-Ag/AgCl under simulated solar irradiation, which can be attributed to a very high active surface area. A simple generalized procedure for the calculation of electrolyte concentrations in pH-buffers is proposed. Mixtures of acid-base systems and formation of polynuclear species at high ionic strengths are considered, and a diagram useful for the study and preparation of the buffers is shown.

Star polyelectrolytes with responsive properties to external stimuli, such as pH, temperature and ionic condition, were utilized to fabricate layer-by-layer (LbL) microcapsules . The microstructure of star polyelectrolytes was first studied in semi-dilute solution by in situ small-angle neutron scattering (SANS). These measurements show that with the addition of salts, arms of strong cationic star polyelectrolytes will contract and the spatial ordering of the stars would be interrupted. Mesoscopic Simulations of Polyelectrolyte Electrophoresis in Nanochannels

We present the results of mesoscopic dissipative particle dynamics (DPD) simulations of coupled electrohydrodynamic phenomena on the micro- and nanoscale. The effects of electroosmotic flow and slippage combined with polyelectrolyte electrophoresis are investigated in detail, taking full account of hydrodynamic and electrostatic interactions. Our numerical results are in excellent agreement with analytical calculations.
