A combination intermediate-image magnetic plus Si(Li) electron spectrometer for in-beam experiments

1979

Abstract A magnetic lens plus Si(Li) combination in-beam beta spectrometer with focusing properties and field shape similar to those of an intermediate-image spectrometer is described. A high transmission and a large momentum band-width are achieved by placing both the target and the detector in a high magnetic field inside the lens. The beam enters the lens axially, and the Faraday cup is placed inside the lens. The spectrometer is well suited to singles conversion-electron spectroscopy, to electron-heavy particle coincidence measurements, to lifetime measurements and to studies of internal-pair transitions.

The nuclear structure of $^{223}$Fr

1991

Abstract The γ-rays following the β− decay of 223Rn have been investigated by means of γ-ray singles including multispectrum analysis, and γγ-coincidence measurements using Ge detectors. Multipolarities of 38 transitions in 223Fr have been established by measuring conversion electrons with a mini-orange electron spectrometer. Most of the observed transitions could be placed in a level scheme comprising 53 excited states of 223Fr. The level structure is interpreted in terms of K π = 3 2 ± and 1 2 ± parity doublet bands, and a second K π = 3 2 ± higher-lying parity doublet. The experimental data are compared with the theoretical predictions of the reflection-asymmetric rotor model.

Focal-plane detector system for the KATRIN experiment

2014

The focal-plane detector system for the KArlsruhe TRItium Neutrino (KATRIN) experiment consists of a multi-pixel silicon p-i-n-diode array, custom readout electronics, two superconducting solenoid magnets, an ultra high-vacuum system, a high-vacuum system, calibration and monitoring devices, a scintillating veto, and a custom data-acquisition system. It is designed to detect the low-energy electrons selected by the KATRIN main spectrometer. We describe the system and summarize its performance after its final installation.

The nuclear structure of 229Th

2002

Abstract The γ -rays following the β − decay of 229 Ac have been investigated by means of γ -ray singles and γγ -coincidence measurements using Ge detectors. Multipolarities of 40 transitions in 229 Th have been established by measuring conversion electrons with a mini-orange electron spectrometer. The half-lives of the 146.35, 164.53 and 261.96 keV levels have been measured using the advanced time delayed βγγ (t) method. The low-lying states in 229 Th and observed transition rates have been interpreted within the quasiparticle–phonon model with inclusion of Coriolis coupling. Two octupole correlated parity partner bands, with K π =5/2 ± and K π =3/2 ± , were identified in 229 Th.

Experiments with the High Resolution Kaon Spectrometer at JLab Hall C and the new spectroscopy ofΛ12Bhypernuclei

2014

Since the pioneering experiment E89-009 studying hypernuclear spectroscopy using the (e, e’K+) reaction was completed, two additional experiments, E01-011 and E05-115, were performed at Jefferson Lab. These later experiments used a modified experimental design, the "tilt method", to dramatically suppress the large electromagnetic background, and allowed for a substantial increase in luminosity. Additionally, a new kaon spectrometer, HKS (E01-011), a new electron spectrometer, HES, and a new splitting magnet (E05-115) were added to produce new data sets of precision, high-resolution hypernuclear spectroscopy. All three experiments obtained a spectrum for 12B-Lambda, which is the most charact…

Ultra-stable implanted 83Rb/83mKr electron sources for the energy scale monitoring in the KATRIN experiment

2012

The KATRIN experiment aims at the direct model-independent determination of the average electron neutrino mass via the measurement of the endpoint region of the tritium beta decay spectrum. The electron spectrometer of the MAC-E filter type is used, requiring very high stability of the electric filtering potential. This work proves the feasibility of implanted 83Rb/83mKr calibration electron sources which will be utilised in the additional monitor spectrometer sharing the high voltage with the main spectrometer of KATRIN. The source employs conversion electrons of 83mKr which is continuously generated by 83Rb. The K-32 conversion line (kinetic energy of 17.8 keV, natural line width of 2.7 e…

Feasibility of photoelectron sources with sharp lines of stable energy between 20 and 80 keV.

2011

Photo-absorption of γ-rays in thin Al, Co, Ti, and Mo convertors was examined with the aim to produce quasi monoenergetic photoelectrons having an energy spread of 0.5-4.7eV about mean kinetic energies at discrete values between 18632 and 80321eV. The photoelectron rates were estimated for commercial photon sources of (241)Am, (119m)Sn, (125m)Te and (109)Cd with activities of 0.55-3.7GBq. Photoelectrons ejected by (241)Am γ- and X-rays from Co convertors were measured with two different electron spectrometers and obtained energy spectra were compared with Monte Carlo predictions.

A solenoid retarding spectrometer with high resolution and transmission for keV electrons

1992

Abstract We have built an electrostatic electron spectrometer combining both high resolution and large luminosity. The instrument consists essentially of two superconducting solenoids separated by a system of ring electrodes of 4 m in length. Source and detector are placed in the high-field regions of the superconducting solenoids, whereas the repellent analyzing electrostatic potential of the ring electrodes peaks at the minimum of the magnetic field in between these solenoids. The magnetic guiding field provides (i) the acceptance of the full foreward solid angle of 2π, (ii) the transformation of the transverse cyclotron motion into longitudinal motion parallel to the magnetic field. The …

NanoESCA: imaging UPS and XPS with high energy resolution

2005

Abstract A novel imaging electron spectrometer has been used for laterally resolved ultraviolet photoelectron spectroscopy (UPS) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) in the soft X-ray range. The instrument is based on a high-resolution emission microscope optics using a cathode lens and an imaging dispersive analyser. The analyser is corrected for the leading aberration term ( α 2 -term) by means of two hemispherical analysers in antisymmetric configuration with an appropriate transfer lens. Small-area spectra as well as energy-filtered images have been taken in the soft X-ray range for a meteorite sample and in the range of the d-band of a Cu polycrystal. An energy resolution of 106 …
