Analysis of F-wave in metabolic neuropathies: a comparative study in uremic and diabetic patients.

1987

Motor nerve conduction study along the entire length of the ulnar and tibialis posterior nerves was carried out in 30 diabetics compared with 30 uremic patients and 30 control subjects. The conduction in the proximal and the distal nerve segments was evaluated by the determination of the M and F latencies, MNCV (between the stimulus sites), FWCV (between the spinal cord and the stimulus sites), and F-ratio (conduction time ratio of proximal to distal segment). In both groups of patients the lower limbs appear much more involved than the upper, where the ulnar nerve is more commonly affected in uremic than in diabetic patients. In diabetic neuropathy the motor conduction abnormalities are di…

Nerve conduction velocity and circulating immunocomplexes in type 1 diabetic children.

1991

There is evidence from several laboratories of an increased prevalence of circulating immuno-complexes (CIC) in diabetic patients. It has also been suggested that CIC are pathogenetically related to chronic diabetic complications. The aim of this study was to assess peripheral nerve function in children with Type 1 diabetes and to evaluate the relationship between the neurophysiological abnormalities and the possible presence of CIC. The investigation was carried out in 25 Type 1 diabetic patients ranging in age from 7-19 years and in 20 normal controls. Neurophysiological assessment was performed to evaluate motor and sensory conduction velocity on median and tibial nerves. IgG-CIC were de…

Polybutylene succinate artificial scaffold for peripheral nerve regeneration

2021

Regeneration and recovery of nerve tissues are a great challenge for medicine, and positively affect the quality of life of patients. The development of tissue engineering offers a new approach to the problem with the creation of multifunctional artificial scaffolds that act on various levels in the damaged tissue, providing physical and biochemical support for the growth of nerve cells. In this study, the effects of the use of a tubular scaffold made of polybutylene succinate (PBS), surgically positioned at the level of a sciatic nerve injured in rat, between the proximal stump and the distal one, was investigated. Scaffolds characterization was carried out by scanning electron microscopy …

Conduction velocity study in type 1 diabetic patients.

1989

The role of metabolic abnormalities in the development of diabetic neuropathy is controversial. To investigate the peripheral nerve function and the influence of hyperglycemia on nerve conduction in insulin-dependent diabetes, a one-year neurophysiological study was carried out in 30 type 1 diabetic patients ranging in age from 2-16 years. During the 12-month follow-up period the glycosylated hemoglobin determination, motor conduction velocity of the peroneal nerve and the motor and sensory conduction of the tibial nerve were assessed 3 times, at the beginning of the study and every 6 months thereafter. The sensory latency was found significantly delayed in these patients as compared with t…

A case of guillain-barre syndrome in a patient with non small cell lung cancer treated with chemotherapy

2006

Guillain-Barré Syndrome (GBS) is a demyelinating polyneuropathy of probable autoimmune pathogenesis characterized by rapidly progressive symmetric paralysis. In the literature some cases of GBS associated with anticancer chemotherapy are reported. We present a case of a 55-year old woman who complained of progressive motor deficit in four limbs, areflexia in lower limbs and facial nerve paralysis one week after beginning cisplatin-gemcitabine chemotherapy for metastatic lung cancer. The cerebrospinal fluid analysis showed a strong positive Pandy reaction with 435 mg/dl total protein. The electromyography and the electroneuronography established the diagnosis of inflammatory demyelinating po…

Sulcus ulnaris Syndrom nach Traumen im Ellenbogenbereich

2008

For a large scaled test 52 patients with anterior transposition of the ulnar nerve and 62 patients with elbow injuries were examined by questionnaire, physical examination and electroneurography. In conformity with existing literature 24 patients out of 52 suffering from cubital tunnel syndrome had an elbow trauma previously. To our great surprise in seven patients out of 46 with elbow injuries a cubital tunnel syndrome could be found for the first time. The cubital tunnel syndrome appears to be a frequent complication of elbow injuries. Besides the well known fractures of the medial epicondyle and pericondylar fractures leading to cubital tunnel syndrome, in our study fractures of the head…
