Analysis of HMAX Algorithm on Black Bar Image Dataset

2020

An accurate detection and classification of scenes and objects is essential for interacting with the world, both for living beings and for artificial systems. To reproduce this ability, which is so effective in the animal world, numerous computational models have been proposed, frequently based on bioinspired, computational structures. Among these, Hierarchical Max-pooling (HMAX) is probably one of the most important models. HMAX is a recognition model, mimicking the structures and functions of the primate visual cortex. HMAX has already proven its effectiveness and versatility. Nevertheless, its computational structure presents some criticalities, whose impact on the results has never been…

Design and performance evaluation of an hybrid reservation-polling MAC protocol for power-line communications

2003

This paper presents an hybrid reservation-polling MAC protocol able to effectively deal with the channel disturbances typical of Power-line communication systems. Channel access is controlled by a scheduler running on a centralized station. Fast retransmission of corrupted packets is employed to achieve high performance on Power-line channels characterized by frequent error bursts due to impulsive noise. The performance of our proposed mechanism are evaluated by means of simulation, for the more challenging case of time-sensitive traffic sources (voice calls). Results show that the system efficiency is virtually not affected by lightly to moderately disturbed PLC channel. Moreover, by sligh…

Novel Three-Phase Multi-Level Inverter with Reduced Components

2019

A new multilevel converter topology is proposed in this paper. Low component count and compact design are the main features of the proposed topology. Furthermore, the proposed converter is a capacitor-, inductor-, and diode-free configuration, allowing reducing the converter footprint, increasing the lifetime and simplifying the control strategy. Further, a comparative study is carried out to highlight the merits of the proposed circuit as compared to existing multilevel topologies. Finally, simulation results for the three-level version using different modulation strategies are presented.

Teletraffic Engineering for Direct Load Control in Smart Grids

2018

International audience; The traditional paradigm for power grid operation is to continuously adapt energy production to demand. This paradigm is challenged by the increasing penetration of renewable sources, that are more variable and less predictable. An alternative approach is the direct load control of some inherently flexible electric loads to shape the demand. Direct control of deferrable loads presents analogies with flow admission control in telecommunication networks: a request for network resources (bandwidth or energy) can be delayed on the basis of the current network status in order to guarantee some performance metrics. In this paper we go beyond such an analogy, showing that u…

Constitutive Models for the Tensile Behaviour of TRM Materials: Literature Review and Experimental Verification

2021

In recent years, the scientific community has focused its interest on innovative inorganic matrix composite materials, namely TRM (Textile Reinforced Mortar). This class of materials satisfies the need of retrofitting existing masonry buildings, by keeping the compatibility with the substrate. Different recent studies were addressed to improve the knowledge on their mechanical behaviour and some theoretical models were proposed for predicting the tensile response of TRM strips. However, this task is complex due to the heterogeneity of the constituent materials and the stress transfer mechanism developed between matrix and fabric through the interface in the cracked stage. This paper present…

First Steps of µTAS in Latvia

1995

Owing to participation of Latvian and Swedish scientists in the field of chemically sensitive FET and MOS structures it was possible to utilize the technological facilities of the Microelectronics enterprise in Latvia in making an integrated smart sensor as a matrix of chemically sensitive FETs by using silicon based microtechnology. Thereby the first steps of µTAS in Latvia are made in the direction of integration of solid state ionic materials with FET and MOS structures to develop new chemically sensitive structures and systems.

Unsupervised image processing scheme for transistor photon emission analysis in order to identify defect location

2015

International audience; The study of the light emitted by transistors in a highly scaled complementary metal oxide semiconductor (CMOS) integrated circuit (IC) has become a key method with which to analyze faulty devices, track the failure root cause, and have candidate locations for where to start the physical analysis. The localization of defective areas in IC corresponds to a reliability check and gives information to the designer to improve the IC design. The scaling of CMOS leads to an increase in the number of active nodes inside the acquisition area. There are also more differences between the spot’s intensities. In order to improve the identification of all of the photon emission sp…

Robustness of 40 Gb/s ASK modulation formats in the practical system infrastructure.

2006

In this work, we analyzed by means of numerical and laboratory experiments the resilience of 40 Gb/s amplitude shift keying modulation formats to transmission impairments in standard single-mode fiber lines as well as to optical filtering introduced by the optical add/drop multiplexer cascade. Our study is a pre-requisite to assess the implementation of cost-effective 40 Gb/s modulation technology in next generation high bit-rate robust optical transport networks. © 2006 Optical Society of America.
