COST 241 intercomparison of nonlinear refractive index measurements in dispersion shifted optical fibres at =1550 nm

COST 241 measurements of the nonlinear refractive index, n/sub 2/, exhibit a large scatter depending on the specific measurement technique. This is largely due to the electrostrictive contribution to the Kerr nonlinearity, as is revealed by the resonant behaviour of n/sub 2/ (with peak values up to 3.9 10/sup -20/ m/sup 2/ W/sup -1/) observed with signal modulation frequencies in the 0.11 GHz range.

Modeling of trapped charge effects in ferroelectrics: application to piezoactuators

The strain response of lead zirconate titanate piezoelectric multilayer actuators have been measured up to 10 7 N/m 2 stress and the 3.10 6 V/m periodic unipolar driving voltage. An additional nonstationary strain component is detected. This effect is explained in terms of a simple solution of polarization kinetics specific for unipolar driving voltage. Preliminary experimentally assertions are given for space charge effects which manifest itself in the strain as well as charge plot after removing the mechanical load. Review and comparison of experimental techniques used for determination of thin film electro-optic coefficients

The results of electro-optic coefficient measurements performed with three commonly applied techniques used to assess electro-optic coefficients: the Mach–Zehnder, the Teng–Man, and the attenuated total reflectance technique are reported. It is shown that the signal obtained by the Mach–Zehnder and Teng–Man techniques is strongly influenced by the multiple internal reflection and piezo- and electrostrictive thickness change effects, which in our opinion have not been addressed sufficiently in the literature. Electromechanical coupling in anodic niobium oxide: Electric field-induced strain, internal stress, and dielectric response

Seemingly, contradictory results have been reported so far for electrostriction in anodic oxides. Furthermore, no definitive agreement could be obtained with theory. In this paper, in situ techniques are combined to elucidate electrostriction in anodic niobium oxide. The dependence of strain, internal stress, and dielectric constant on the electric field is measured by, respectively, spectroscopic ellipsometry, curvature, and impedance measurements. The through-thickness strain is tensile and proportional to the square of the electric field. Performance of electro-optical plasmonic ring resonators at telecom wavelengths

International audience; In this work we report on the characteristics of an electro-optical dielectric-loaded surface plasmon polariton waveguide ring resonator. By doping the dielectric host matrix with an electro-optical material and designing an appropriate set of planar electrodes, we measured a 16% relative change of transmission upon application of a controlled electric field. We have analyzed the temporal response of the device and conclude that electrostriction of the host matrix is playing a dominating role in the transmission response.

Abstract In Mach–Zehnder interferometric (MZI) method for determination of thin organic film electrooptic ( EO ) coefficients r 13 and r 33 critical effects, like multiple internal reflections and sample thickness modulation due to electrostriction and piezoelectricity are usually overlooked. Ignoring these effects may lead to inaccurate calculation of EO coefficients from experimental data by the simplified equations. To describe the influence of the above mentioned effects on the output of a MZI containing a thin film polymer sample we have used the Abeles matrix formalism.

Ferroelectric materials are a subclass of pyro- and piezoelectric materials. They are very rarely found in crystalline organic or polymeric materials because ferroelectric hysteresis requires enough molecular mobility to reorient molecular dipoles in space. So semicrystalline polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) is nearly the only known compound. On the contrary, ferroelectric behavior is very often observed in chiral liquid crystalline materials, both low molar mass and polymeric.
