Combining content extraction heuristics

2008

The main text content of an HTML document on the WWW is typically surrounded by additional contents, such as navigation menus, advertisements, link lists or design elements. Content Extraction (CE) is the task to identify and extract the main content. Ongoing research has spawned several CE heuristics of different quality. However, so far only the Crunch framework combines several heuristics to improve its overall CE performance. Since Crunch, though, many new algorithms have been formulated. The CombinE system is designed to test, evaluate and optimise combinations of CE heuristics. Its aim is to develop CE systems which yield better and more reliable extracts of the main content of a web …

An Interface Mechanical Model with a Cohesive to Frictional Transition

2009

A thermodynamically consistent mechanical interface model is presented. The model is based on the interface damage mechanic theory applied in a special fashion such that the interface damage variable is also used as a parameter which drives the continuous and smooth transition from the sound initial cohesive state to the final fully fractured frictional state. Interface damage activation and fictional sliding are promoted by a damage activation function and a Coulomb frictional yielding function. The main features of the model are discussed in details and some numerical results for the material response are shown in monotonic and cyclic loading regimes.

The Gypsy Database (GyDB) of mobile genetic elements.

2007

In this article, we introduce the Gypsy Database (GyDB) of mobile genetic elements, an in-progress database devoted to the non-redundant analysis and evolutionary-based classification of mobile genetic elements. In this first version, we contemplate eukaryotic Ty3/Gypsy and Retroviridae long terminal repeats (LTR) retroelements. Phylogenetic analyses based on the gag-pro-pol internal region commonly presented by these two groups strongly support a certain number of previously described Ty3/Gypsy lineages originally reported from reverse-transcriptase (RT) analyses. Vertebrate retroviruses (Retroviridae) are also constituted in several monophyletic groups consistent with genera proposed by t…

CRACK PROPAGATION IN FINITE ELEMENTS AUGMENTED WITH EMBEDDED INTERPHASES

2022

In the FE analysis of quasi-brittle materials, one of the main issues is how to correctly capture cracks propagation. In particular, under specific load intensity, strains progressively localize in narrow bands, leading to a global nonlinear softening response until collapse. A variety of FE models have been proposed, which may be separated in two main groups: discrete crack models and continuous models. Discrete crack models introduce a discontinuity along the inter-element boundaries or inside elements (intra-element discontinuity). Continuous models modify the constitutive relations of the local material to better describe its behaviour in presence of a fracture. In the framework of intr…

Towards Successful Implementation of a Virtual Classroom for Vocational Higher Education in Indonesia

2019

The virtual classroom continues to grow, but it is becoming more and more the norm, and it is fundamentally different from the vocational students at the Indonesian university. With the promised benefits of the virtual classroom, many challenges and difficulties come in the implementation. Although there are already successful design principles for virtual classrooms that support organizations in overcoming the challenges, the approach to implementing the design principles of virtual classroom at the vocational higher education in Indonesia is still lacking. In this study, we aim to answer the research gap and used the design sciences research by interviewing the lecturers to design the sol…

Luminescent Ionic Transition-Metal Complexes for Light-Emitting Electrochemical Cells

2012

Higher efficiency in the end-use of energy requires substantial progress in lighting concepts. All the technologies under development are based on solid-state electroluminescent materials and belong to the general area of solid-state lighting (SSL). The two main technologies being developed in SSL are light-emitting diodes (LEDs) and organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs), but in recent years, light-emitting electrochemical cells (LECs) have emerged as an alternative option. The luminescent materials in LECs are either luminescent polymers together with ionic salts or ionic species, such as ionic transition-metal complexes (iTMCs). Cyclometalated complexes of Ir(III) are by far the most util…

Discriminating octahedral transition metal ions: highly selective tripodal tris-(2,2′-bipyridine) functionalized piperazine cyclophane receptor for C…

2011

New tripodal transition metal ion receptors, tris(5-ethoxycarbonyl-2,2'-bipyridine) and tris(5-carboxylate-2,2'-bipyridine) substituted 27-membered trimeric piperazine cyclophanes 5 and 7 as well as tetra(5-ethoxycarbonyl-2,2'-bipyridine) substituted 36-membered tetrameric piperazine cyclophane 6, have been prepared and their transition metal ion complexing properties studied in solution by UV-vis spectroscopy and in the solid state by single-crystal X-ray diffraction. The crystal structures of [H(3)5(3+)·Fe(2+)]·4(ClO(4)(-))·CF(3)COO(-) (V), [H(3)7(2+)·Fe(2+)]·2(SO(4)(2-)) (VII) and the reference complex [tris(5,5'-bis(ethoxycarbonyl)-2,2'-bipyridine)Fe(II) perchlorate] (I) showed that the…

Positive Iron Balance in Chronic Kidney Disease: How Much is Too Much and How to Tell?

2017

<b><i>Background:</i></b> Regulation of body iron occurs at cellular, tissue, and systemic levels. In healthy individuals, iron absorption and losses are minimal, creating a virtually closed system. In the setting of chronic kidney disease and hemodialysis (HD), increased iron losses, reduced iron absorption, and limited iron availability lead to iron deficiency. Intravenous (IV) iron therapy is frequently prescribed to replace lost iron, but determining an individual’s iron balance and stores can be challenging and imprecise, contributing to uncertainty about the long-term safety of IV iron therapy. <b><i>Summary:</i></b> Patients on HD recei…

Serum metal levels in a population of Spanish pregnant women

2022

Objective: To describe serum levels of calcium, copper, selenium, magnesium, iron and zinc and evaluate their relationship with maternal socio-demographic characteristics and dietary variables in women in the first trimester of pregnancy. Method: Cross-sectional study with 1279 participants from the INMA cohorts. Results: The concentrations of the elements analyzed were within the normal range. Associations with higher levels of these metals were found for calcium with white meat intake (p = 0.026), for cop-per with excess body weight (p 71 g/day) (p = 0.014) and having been born in Spain (p = 0.001). Further, lower iron levels were associated with being overweight (p = 0.021) or obese (p <…
