Electrophysiological adaptations to endurance and strength training
2020
Abstract Sex differences in exercise training adaptations are still a largely unexplored field of study. There are well-known differences between men and women in terms of their average baseline fitness, such as larger muscle mass and higher cardiorespiratory fitness in men compared to women. Trained women may have a higher performance level than untrained men, but at the top end of the physical training and performance curve, i.e., where athletes are, men exhibit a higher prevalence and amplitude of sinus bradycardia and other electrophysiological changes. This chapter will explore whether men and women respond differently to a standardized training stimulus when sex differences at baselin…
Unilateral Conditioning Contractions Enhance Power Output in Elite Short Track Speed Skaters
2018
AbstractThe objective of the present study was to assess the effect of unilateral lower-body-conditioning muscle contractions during multiple sets of fatiguing repeated jumps in elite athletes. Five elite short-track speed-skating athletes performed 9 sets of 6 maximal consecutive jumps on 2 separate occasions: with (COND) and without (CTRL) preliminary voluntary conditioning contractions (CC) 5 min before the beginning of the sets. The CC consisted of 2 consecutive 3 s maximal unilateral isometric squats against a fixed bar, resulting in a 6 s overall isometric contraction per leg. For each set, power output (PO) was measured using a linear position transducer and averaged over the 6 corre…
I Symposium of Elite Performance in Combat Sports
2017
This report presents a summary of the I Symposium of Elite Performance in Combat Sports held in Madrid, May 27, 2017. The symposium, organized by the Faculty of Sport Sciences-INEF of the Polytechnic University of Madrid, aimed to bring science closer to practice. A panel of highly successful athletes involved in karate, fencing, and taekwondo shared their experiences. The speakers presented crucial topics for an optimal preparation and high level performance such as strength training, sport psychology, brain maturation, sports nutrition, competition planning, sport injuries, and perceptual-decision making training.
Restitusjonsvaner hos unge toppidrettsutøvere i Sør-Norge : En kartleggingsstudie av utholdenhet- og ballspillutøvere
2018
Masteroppgave idrettsvitenskap ME517 - Universitetet i Agder 2018 Background: In order to perform optimally in training and competition, the recovery inbetween, through adequate diet and sufficient sleep/rest, is of great importance. Up until now, most studies have only featured adult athletes. Similarly, studies conducted on young athletes, as well as across sports, are limited. Purpose: The purpose of this study was to assess the habits of recovery, in terms of diet and sleep, with regards to the recommendations given by Helsedirektoratet and Olympiatoppen. Further investigating the use of different recovery strategies, among young elite athletes in southern Norway. Method: A total of 36 …
