Monikielisyyden näkeminen voimavarana : kokemuksia Utrechtin kansainvälisestä koulusta

Monikielisyys on nykyisin arkipäivää monissa kouluissa. Myös Suomen kouluissa erikielisten oppilaiden määrä on kasvanut ja sen odotetaan yhä kasvavan tulevaisuudessa. Tässä artikkelissa tarkastelemme, miten koulut voivat positiivisesti huomioida monikielisyyttä arjessaan. Käytämme esimerkkinä Utrechtin kansainvälistä koulua Alankomaissa ja kuvaamme, miten oppilaiden monipuoliset kielirepertuaarit nähdään siellä voimavarana ja miten niitä hyödynnetään tarkoituksenmukaisesti opetuksessa. In this paper I reflect on methodological aspects to take into consideration when developing methods for investigating three- to five-year-old children’s beliefs about language, language use and bilingualism. I analyze participant observations and notes taken in the field. The study focuses on bilingual Finnish-Swedish children in Swedish-medium preschools in Finland. At one of the schools, most of the children and I did not share a common language, so the interaction between us heightened both the children’s language awareness and that of my own. In this article, children’s views to language are discussed. The data comes from a project called Situated metalinguistic awareness and foreign language learning. It is argued that in children’s conceptualizations, the knowledge and skills that are required at school are separate from the skills of everyday life. For example, the English they learn in everyday life - “Play Station English” - is not identified with the “Classroom English”. It is suggested that the gap between school and everyday life, or, between different school subjects dealing with language (mother tongue and foreign languages) should be better bridged. peerReviewed

We present the overall goals of LITHME and the network’s working groups focusing on diverse questions related to language and technology.
