Ofd1, a Human Disease Gene, Regulates the Length and Distal Structure of Centrioles

SUMMARYCentrosomes and their component centrioles represent the principal microtubule organizing centers of animal cells. Here we show that the gene underlying Orofaciodigital Syndrome 1, Ofd1, is a component of the distal centriole that controls centriole length. In the absence of Ofd1, distal regions of centrioles, but not procentrioles, elongate abnormally. These long centrioles are structurally similar to normal centrioles, but contain destabilized microtubules with abnormal post-translational modifications. The FACT complex stimulates transcription elongation on nucleosomal templates. In vivo experiments also involve FACT in the reassembly of nucleosomes traversed by RNA polymerase II. Since several features of chromatin organization vary throughout the genome, we wondered whether FACT is equally required for all genes. We show in this study that the in vivo depletion of Spt16, one of the subunits of Saccharomyces cerevisiae FACT, strongly affects transcription of three genes, GAL1, PHO5, and Kluyveromyces lactis LAC4, which exhibit positioned nucleosomes at their transcribed regions. There are no studies which focus on the mechanical characteristics of kinesiology tape, its mechanical properties, nor its adherence following the ISO international standard test methods for tape elongation. Reversible hydrogen bond network dynamics: molecular dynamics simulations of calix[4]arene-catenanes.

We present detailed molecular dynamics (MD) simulations of mechanically interlocked calix[4]arene-catenanes under external force. Single-molecule force spectroscopy experiments revealed that the separation of dimers with two aliphatic loops results in reversible hydrogen bond breakage through an intermediate in a triple-well potential, while the tetra-loop species separates in a one-step manner (Janke, M.; et al. The influence of external uniaxial stretching on the electromigration and diffusion of hydrogen in iron

Electromigration and diffusion of hydrogen in iron, depending on unit elongation, were investigated. The resistivity method was applied in the investigations. It was found that the obtained experimental results cannot be described by means of a single flux of hydrogen, which diffuses in the electric field. In order to explain the obtained results, we assumed the existence of the following two fluxes of hydrogen in the stretched metal: migration, according to the interstitial mechanism, and migration according to the interstitial-defective mechanism. The dependence of effective valences and diffusion coefficients for both mechanisms were determined.

Abstract Biodegradable packaging promises a more environmentally friendly future. Nevertheless, a single biopolymer often lacks of some important properties. In order to contribute to this challenge, biodegradable bilayer films from poly(lactic acid) (PLA) and MaterBi® were prepared in this work and compared with monolayer films obtained with both the polymers. The prepared films were fully characterized through morphological, mechanical, thermal, chemical, optical and water contact angle analyses. Recycling of plastics from packaging

Plastic waste coming from the separate collection of packaging film was recycled and characterized. The material is a blend of low density and linear low density polyethylene and after recycling shows mechanical and rheological properties depending on the processing conditions and apparatus. High processing temperature and high residence times strongly enhance the degradation processes and reduce the mechanical properties, in particular the elongation at break. A possible use of this recycled plastic is for the production of low pressure pipes but the properties are lower than those of virgin pipe grade polyethylene.
