Automatic Detection of Hemangioma through a Cascade of Self-organizing Map Clustering and Morphological Operators

Abstract In this paper we propose a method for the automatic detection of hemangioma regions, consisting of a cascade of algorithms: a Self Organizing Map (SOM) for clustering the image pixels in 25 classes (using a 5x5 output layer) followed by a morphological method of reducing the number of classes (MMRNC) to only two classes: hemangioma and non-hemangioma. We named this method SOM-MMRNC. To evaluate the performance of the proposed method we have used Fuzzy C-means (FCM) for comparison. Adrenal cavernous hemangioma: which correct decision making process?

Introduction: Cavernous hemangioma of the adrenal gland is a rare benign tumor characterized by the presence of blood-fil- led, dilated vascular spaces. These adrenal masses are usually non-functioning and the patients have no symptoms so the diagnosis is incidental. Methods: We performed a systematic literature review for all articles published until April 2015. The initial search identified 98 publications. Cavernous haemangioma of the external auditory canal: clinical case and review of the literature

Although benign vascular lesions are frequent in the head and the neck region, clinical evidence of cavernous haemangioma of the external auditory canal is extremely rare; when present, the lesion invades the middle ear space. Herein, a rare case of a soft mass filling the external auditory canal, not involving the tympanic membrane, in a symptomatic 59-year-old male is described. Clinical and audiological characteristics, imaging studies and surgical treatment with histological evaluation are reported, which led to a diagnosis of a cavernous haemangioma. AbstractInfantile hemangiomas may affect the quality of life (QoL) of patients and their family members, as anxiety and worry may commonly occur in parents, also linked to the social adversion they experience. We underline the beneficial impact of oral propranolol therapy on QoL of patients with infantile hemangiomas (IH) and of their relatives. A specific questionnaire measuring QoL was administered to parents of IH patients at beginning and end of a treatment with oral propranolol. Infantile Hemangioma Detection using Deep Learning

Infantile hemangiomas are the most common type of benign tumor which appear in the first weeks of life. As currently there is no robust protocol to monitor and assess the hemangioma status, this study proposes a preliminary method to detect the lesion. Therefore, in this paper we describe a hemangiomas classifier based on a linear convolutional neural network architecture. The challenge was to achieve a good classification using a relatively small internal database of 240 images from 40 different patients. Infantile hemangioma is the most common tumor of childhood. This study proposes an automatic detection as a preliminary step for a further accurate monitoring tool to evaluate the clinical status of hemangioma.
