Task scheduling control of BGA solder joint process in flexible manufacturing system

2006

This paper describes an open loop control method of the solder joint process in a rework station for faulty printed circuit board (PCBs) containing electronic components in packages ball grid arrays (BGAs). In particular, a mathematical model describing the solder joint process is, first of all, obtained. Then, the desired thermal profile of the junctions BGA-PCB is determined according to the physical constraints of the rework station framework. The control parameters corresponding to the above desired thermal profile are identified using the above mathematical model. Finally, the open loop control algorithm is implemented on the supervisor interface of the rework station in order to carri…

An embedded diagnostic system for wheelchairs brushless drives monitoring

2006

The implementation of a microcontroller based monitoring system for the diagnosis of a brushless synchronous motor drives is presented. It finds its primarily interest on motorized wheelchair for disabled people. The embedded system mainly controls all the principal parameters of the electrical drives together with the power supply system. Pre-failure and failure conditions are routinely logged and, depending on the malfunction severity, alarm messages are created and sent to a remote base station by using the GSM wireless network.

Distributed and mobile systems based on wireless networks: definition of a generic control architecture

2005

The tendency toward the use of distributed systems is due to these systems have demonstrated to be a good option for the industrial control systems implementation, because of their flexibility and power, which can be increased with the application of artificial intelligence techniques. In this line, our research group has developed several distributed systems applied to chemical analysis and industrial automation. For these implementations the CAN network was used. Nowadays there is a market for technical tasks like distributed control, monitoring or data acquisition where there is a need for wireless connectivity. Thus, in this paper we want to discuss possibilities and necessary developme…

Reconfigurable digital instrumentation based on FPGA

2004

A novel application of FPGA to realize digital test equipment is proposed. It takes advantage of the dynamic reconfigurability of FPGAs so easily tailoring custom test functions in the same instrument. This results in high effective, compact and low cost instruments.

Wearable wireless photoplethysmography sensors

2008

Wearable health monitoring sensors may support early detection of abnormal conditions and prevention of their consequences. Recent designs of three wireless photoplethysmography monitoring devices embedded in hat, glove and sock, and connected to PC or mobile phone by means of the Bluetooth technology, are described. First results of distant monitoring of heart rate and pulse wave transit time using the newly developed devices are presented.

Development of an optical link card for the upgrade phase II of TileCal experiment

2010

This work presents the design of an optical link card developed in the frame of the R&D activities for the phase 2 upgrade of the TileCal experiment as part of the evaluation of different technologies for the final choice in the next two years. The board is designed as a mezzanine which can work independently or plugged in the Optical Multiplexer Board of the TileCal backend electronics. It includes two SNAP 12 optical connectors able to transmit and receive up to 75 Gbps and one SFP optical connector for lower speeds and compatibility with existing hardware as the Read Out Driver. All processing is done in a Stratix II GX FPGA. Details are given on the hardware design including signal and …

Implementation of the ERI standard and Evaluation of Applications with several low-cost technologies

2008

The electronic registration and identification (ERI) systems allow carrying out a remote, secure and univocal identification of a vehicle through electronic devices. This paper presents the implementation of the ERI standard (ISO 24534 & 24535) in an API to develop applications. The implementation took into account the different components of the system to build the architecture of the identification system. Several applications have been developed in order to test this API with several low-cost technologies (Wifi, Bluetooth and RFID).

Efficient pipeline FFT processors for WLAN MIMO-OFDM systems

2005

The most area-efficient pipeline FFT processors for WLAN MIMO-OFDM systems are presented. It is shown that although the R2/sup 3/SDF architecture is the most area-efficient approach for implementing pipeline FFT processors, RrMDC architectures are more efficient in MIMO-OFDM systems when more than three channels are used.

Feasibility of Body-centric Systems by Using passive textile RFID tags

2012

Recent progresses in the design of wearable RFID-tag antennas stimulate the idea of passive body-centric systems, wherein the required power to drive the wearable tags is directly scavenged from the interrogation signal emitted by the reader unit. While active body-centric links have been extensively investigated, the feasibility of passive systems is still questionable, due to the poor sensitivity of the tags and due to the modest reading distances. This paper describes a systematic measurement campaign involving low-profile wearable textile tags in the UHF RFID band. It was demonstrated that both on-body and off-body links are affordable, with a power budget fully compliant with the avail…
