Impact of Myocardial Fibrosis on Left Ventricular Function Evaluated by Feature-Tracking Myocardial Strain Cardiac Magnetic Resonance in Competitive …

2019

BACKGROUND To analyze the effect of myocardial fibrosis on left ventricular (LV) function evaluated by feature-tracking strain analysis by cine cardiac magnetic resonance (CMR) in competitive male triathletes with normal ejection fraction (EF).Methods and Results:78 asymptomatic male triathletes with >10 weekly training hours (43±11 years) and 28 male age-matched controls were studied by late gadolinium enhancement (LGE) and cine CMR. Global and segmental radial, longitudinal and circumferential strains were analyzed using feature-tracking cine CMR. Focal non-ischemic LGE was observed in 15 of 78 triathletes (19%, LGE+) with predominance in the basal inferolateral segments. LVEF was normal …

Prognostic factors for cryotherapy of colorectal liver metastases.

2004

Abstract Background . Cryotherapy is a local ablative treatment option for non-resectable liver tumours. We aimed to identify prognostic indicators, that may allow better selection or stratification for adjuvant therapies of patients. Methods . Fifty-five patients had cryotherapy for colorectal liver metastases. The patient-, tumour- and operative details were recorded prospectively. Mean follow up was 24 months. A uni- and multivariate analysis for possible prognostic factors was performed. Results . There was a trend towards better survival for patients with unilobar liver metastases, preoperative serum levels of carcinoembrional antigen (CEA) not exceeding 20 ng/ml and patients undergoin…

Elevated serum levels of IGF-binding protein 2 in patients with non-seminomatous germ cell cancer: correlation with tumor markers alpha-fetoprotein a…

2008

Background/aimsAlterations of the IGF system have been described in several different types of cancer. However, no information is available about the role of the IGF system in patients with non-seminomatous germ cell cancer.MethodsFree IGF-I, IGF-II, acid-labile subunit, and IGF-binding proteins (IGFBPs) 1–4 were analyzed by specific RIAs in 32 patients with untreated non-seminomas and compared with IGFBP levels of 38 healthy controls. Serum IGFBPs were analyzed by western ligand blotting (WLB) and immunoblotting. In 16 patients, IGFBP profiles were measured before, during, and after treatment.ResultsIn patients with testicular cancer, IGF-II levels were on average 1.44-fold higher than in …

Circulating hematopoietic progenitor cells in runners

2002

Because endurance exercise causes release of mediators and growth factors active on the bone marrow, we asked whether it might affect circulating hematopoietic progenitor cells (HPCs) in amateur runners [ n = 16, age: 41.8 ± 13.5 (SD) yr, training: 93.8 ± 31.8 km/wk] compared with sedentary controls ( n = 9, age: 39.4 ± 10.2 yr). HPCs, plasma cortisol, interleukin (IL)-6, granulocyte colony-stimulating factor (G-CSF), and the growth factor fms-like tyrosine kinase-3 (flt3)-ligand were measured at rest and after a marathon (M; n = 8) or half-marathon (HM; n = 8). Circulating HPC counts (i.e., CD34+cells and their subpopulations) were three- to fourfold higher in runners than in controls at b…

Immunolocalization of Tenascin-C in Human Type II Fiber Atrophy

2000

Tenascin-C is a multifunctional extracellular matrix glycoprotein with stimulatory and anti-adhesive or inhibitory properties for axon growth. Its location and discontinuous expression are restricted in innervated muscle tissues. Tenascin-C accumulated interstitially among human denervated muscle fibers and close to normal-sized fibers. To expand our knowledge of the expression of tenascin-C in human neuromuscular disorders, we investigated immunohistologically 20 human muscle specimens with type II myofiber atrophy of children and adults. Tenascin-C immunoreactivity in adult type II atrophy was frequent, and accumulation in children was sparse and weak. In both groups, tenascin-C immunorea…

Predicted and actual fetal weight throughout the last trimester.

1997

The aim of our study was to obtain, in normal pregnancies, references values of predicted and actual fetal weight for both male and female fetuses and for fetuses born to nulliparous and multiparous women between weeks 28 and 41 of gestation. Predicted fetal weight curves represented calculations of weight in the third trimester based on weight data obtained during the second trimester. These curves were obtained from 134 ultrasonograms obtained between weeks 20 and 27. Actual fetal weight curves represented the values calculated from third trimester measurements and were based on 374 ultrasonograms obtained between weeks 28 and 41. For predicted fetal weight minor differences were found be…

Subtype-specific incidence of testicular cancer in Germany: a pooled analysis of nine population-based cancer registries.

2009

Summary Comparisons of incidence estimates of testicular cancer subtypes beyond seminoma and non-seminoma are virtually missing in the epidemiologic literature. We analysed incidence data from population-based German cancer registries to provide subtype-specific incidences of testicular cancer. We pooled data from nine cancer registries from 1998 to 2003. We estimated incidence and mortality time trends of West and East Germany. Incidence and mortality were standardized by the European standard population. The annual percentage incidence change from 1961 through 1989 was 4.9% in East Germany and 3.0% from 1970 through 2004 in Saarland. Incidence increases were the most pronounced among adol…

Tumor Volume, CT Scan, Lymphography, Sonography, Intravenous Pyelography, and Tumor Markers in Testis Tumors

1989

Correlation of tumor volume to tumor stage in 134 patients with nonseminomatous testicular tumors, which were classified according to the TNM system, revealed similar tumor load for N0 and N1 patients. CT scans (n = 92), lymphangiography (n = 47), intravenous pyelography (IVP) (n = 134), sonography (n = 118) and serial tumor markers (n = 82) were evaluated for sensitivity, specificity and accuracy, both separately and in different combinations. The best individual results were obtained by lymphangiography (sensitivity 0.77, specificity 0.73, accuracy 0.75) and CT scan (sensitivity 0.52, specificity 0.91, accuracy 0.70). In combination CT scan and lymphangiography were the most valuable diag…
