The Determinants of Migrants’ Remittance Inflows in the MENA Region: A Macroeconomic Approach

2014

Macroeconomic studies on the determinants of remittance flows have traditionally reviewed the role that economic conditions of host and home countries of migrants play in this process. New contributions have enlarged that setting by dealing with socio-political (demographics, institutions) and individual (education) dimensions influencing migrants’ behaviour when they remit money back home. In this investigation, we test for the role of all these variables in a general framework when analysing the case of the MENA (Middle East and North of Africa) region. Results indicate that the state of the business cycle, the characteristics of households (fertility, income per capita), and those of the…

Concept of a high-resolution online mass separator for the Munich fission fragment accelerator

1997

A fission fragment accelerator combined with the Munich high-flux reactor FRM-II is under design for the delivery of intense beams of mass separated very neutron-rich fission fragments with energies at the Coulomb barrier They can be used to produce very heavy neutron-rich nuclei in fusion reactions. The large neutron excess will result in much longer lifetimes of the produced heavy elements, compared to neutron-deficient ones produced in reactions with stable nuclear beams. Thus fast a-chains can no longer be used to identify the heavy reaction products. A new separator will be used consisting of a velocity filter, an ion guide system (IGISOL) and a Penning trap. The velocity filter separa…

Towards on-line production of N=Z94Ag at IGISOL

2008

Abstract A future study of the ground state and low-lying isomeric states of 94 Ag and 96 Ag at the Ion Guide Isotope Separator On-Line (IGISOL) facility, University of Jyvaskyla, requires the development of a low-energy beam of neutron-deficient silver. In order to attain the highest possible extraction efficiencies the coupling of a hot cavity graphite catcher device to the IGISOL mass-separator is planned. A heavy-ion fusion-evaporation reaction will produce the silver recoils which will be captured in the graphite catcher. Resonant laser ionization techniques will be applied to efficiently and selectively ionize the evaporated silver atoms. A simulation program has been written to study…

The laser ion source and trap (LIST) – A highly selective ion source

2008

A combined structure consisting of a laser ion source and a linear Paul trap (LIST) has been designed to produce radioactive ion beams of high purity and optimal temporal and spacial brilliance at on-line isotope separator (ISOL) facilities. The functionality of the LIST was experimentally demonstrated in off-line tests using the RISIKO off-line mass separator together with an all solid state Ti:sapphire laser system at the University of Mainz. Two different ion trap designs were tested extracting the performance of these devices regarding ionization efficiency and selectivity as well as time structure and transverse emittance of the produced ion beam. The results of these measurements are …

Optical spectroscopy and performance tests with a solid state laser ion source at HRIBF

2008

An ISOLDE-type hot-cavity laser ion source based on high-repetition-rate Ti:Sapphire lasers has been set up at the Holifield radioactive ion beam facility. To assess the feasibility of the all-solid-state laser system for applications at advanced radioactive ion beam facilities, spectroscopy and performance tests have been conducted with this source. The results of recent studies on excitation schemes, source efficiency, beam emittance and ion time structure are presented.

Cooling and bunching of ion beams for collinear laser spectroscopy

2003

A greatly increased sensitivity in collinear laser spectroscopy experiments has been achieved by the application of new on-line ion cooling and bunching techniques. Cooling of a low-energy ion beam to low emittance and low velocity spread is shown to increase the peak efficiency while bunching the beam results in highly efficient background suppression.

A linear radiofrequency ion trap for accumulation, bunching, and emittance improvement of radioactive ion beams

2000

An ion beam cooler and buncher has been developed for the manipulation of radioactive ion beams. The gas-filled linear radiofrequency ion trap system is installed at the Penning trap mass spectrometer ISOLTRAP at ISOLDE/CERN. Its purpose is toaccumulate the 60-keV continuous ISOLDE ion beam with high efficiency and to convert it into low-energy low-emittance ion pulses. The efficiency was found to exceed 10\,\% in agreement with simulations. A more than 10-fold reduction of the ISOLDE beam emittance can be achieved. The system has been used successfully for first on-line experiments. Its principle, setup and performance will be discussed. An ion beam cooler and buncher has been developed fo…

Off-line commissioning of the ISOLDE cooler

2007

International audience; Among the multiple progresses in radioactive ion beam (RIB) manipulation for physics experiments, the beam cooling and bunching in gas-filled RF traps has become a widely used technique. It is particularly well adapted to precision experiments, such as Penning trap mass spectrometry or collinear laser spectroscopy. At ISOLDE, an rf quadrupole cooler and ion buncher (RFQCB) has been designed and developed to deliver radioactive beams of improved quality among most of the on-line experiments. The results of the first off-line tests have shown that high transmission efficiencies could be achieved with different RIBs of alkali metals, as it was expected. During the later…

On-line laser spectroscopy of refractory radioisotopes at the JYFL IGISOL facility

1998

A major objective of the laser-IGISOL program has been realized with the first ever on-line observation of collinear laser induced fluorescence from an ion of a refractory element. The measurements demonstrate that the IGISOL can be operated in a mode that produces ion beams of good emittance with reasonable extraction efficiency. The technique has been used to study the neutron-deficient Hf isotopes.

CERN’s Linac4 cesiated surface H− source

2017

Linac4 cesiated surface H− sources are routinely operated for the commissioning of the CERN’s Linac4 and on an ion source test stand. Stable current of 40-50 mA are achieved but the transmission through the LEBT of 80% was below expectations and triggered additional beam simulation and characterization. The H− beam profile is not Gaussian and emittance measurements are larger than simulation. The status of ongoing development work is described; 36 mA H− and 20 mA D− beams were produced with a 5.5 mm aperture cesiated surface ion source. The emittances measured at the test stand are presented. During a preliminary test, the Linac4 proton source delivered a total beam intensity of 70 mA (p, H…
