Sex differences in interhemispheric communication during face identity encoding: Evidence from ERPs

Sex-related hemispheric lateralization and interhemispheric transmission times (IHTTs) were examined in twenty-four participants at the level of the first visual ERP components (P1 and N170) during face identity encoding in a divided visual-field paradigm. While no lateralization-related and sex-related differences were reflected in the P1 characteristics, these two factors modulated the N170. Indeed, N170 amplitudes indicated a right hemisphere (RH) dominance in men (and a more bilateral functioning in women). Recognition memory and prefrontal cortex: Dissociating recollection and familiarity processes using rTMS

Recognition memory can be supported by both the assessment of the familiarity of an item and by the recollection of the context in which an item was encountered. The neural substrates of these memory processes are controversial. To address these issues we applied repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) over the right and left dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (DLPFC) of healthy subjects performing a remember/know task. rTMS disrupted familiarity judgments when applied before encoding of stimuli over both right and left DLPFC. rTMS disrupted recollection when applied before encoding of stimuli over the right DLPFC. The cyborg as a metaphor for cultural encodings of the interaction between humans and technology has been an accepted trope since the publication of Donna Haraway’s “Cyborg Manifesto.” Alex Garland’s 2015 film Ex Machina shares many of its key themes and motifs with earlier science fiction films, from Fritz Lang’s Metropolis to Ridley Scott’s Blade Runner. A first viewing of the film thus suggests an interpretation that focuses on the film’s portrayal of its female cyborgs Ava and Kyoko as another version of the “pleasure model” in the mode of Lang’s Maria or Scott’s Pris. Color encoding for polychromatic single-channel optical pattern recognition

The common multichannel system for recognizing colored images is replaced by a color-encoded single-channel system. Amethod inspired by the Munsell color system is used for encoding the different colors as phase and amplitude functions. It is shown that for many practical cases the phase information part of the color code is sufficient for obtaining good results. An implementation based on a liquid-crystal television panel that works in a phase-modulation mode is suggested. Computer simulations that demonstrate the capabilities of the suggested method are given as well as a comparison with previously published multichannel performance.

Active spike transmission in the neuron model with a winding threshold manifold

International audience; We analyze spiking responses of excitable neuron model with a winding threshold manifold on a pulse stimulation. The model is stimulated with external pulse stimuli and can generate nonlinear integrate-and-fire and resonant responses typical for excitable neuronal cells (all-or-none). In addition we show that for certain parameter range there is a possibility to trigger a spiking sequence with a finite number of spikes (a spiking message) in the response on a short stimulus pulse. Ranking and unrankingk-ary trees with a 4k –4 letter alphabet

Abstract The problem of the direct generation in A-order of binary trees was stated by Zaks in 1980. In 1988 Roelants van Baronaigien and Ruskey gave a solution for k-ary trees with n internal nodes using an encoding sequence of kn+1 integers between 1 and n. Vajnovszki and Pallo improved this result for binary trees in 1994 using words of length n–1 on a four letter alphabet. Recently Korsh generalized the Vajnovszki and Pallo’s generating algorithm to k-ary trees using an alphabet whose cardinality depends on k but not on n. We give in this paper ranking and unranking algorithms for k-ary trees using the Korsh’s encoding scheme.

The node-depth encoding

The node-depth encoding has elements from direct and indirect encoding for trees which encodes trees by storing the depth of nodes in a list. Node-depth encoding applies specific search operators that is a typical characteristic for direct encodings. An investigation into the bias of the initialization process and the mutation operators of the node-depth encoding shows that the initialization process has a bias to solutions with small depths and diameters, and a bias towards stars. Encoding and maintenance of information in visual working memory in an S1-S2 task with a 1500 ms retention phase were investigated by means of event-related brain potentials (ERPs).
