Semantic sense extraction from Wikipedia pages
2010
This paper presents a technique aimed to extract structured information from unstructured Wikipedia contents related to a particular topic, and to arrange it in a semantic way inside an ontology. The general framework is the design of an artificial agent able to deliberate when increasing its domain knowledge. In particular, this cognitive agent acts as a dialogue manager in an Intelligent Tutoring System (ITS) already presented by the authors. Our approach is based on the definition of useful patterns able to extract and identify novel concepts and relations to be added to the knowledge base. We propose a method that uses information from the wiki page’s structure. We define different stra…
The use of Technology in the promotion of Children's Emotional Intelligence: The multimedia program "Developing Emotional Intelligence"
2018
"Developing Emotional Intelligence” is an Italian language multimedia tool created for children between 8 and 12 years of age. The software is based on the four ‘branches’ of model of emotional intelligence proposed by Mayer and Salovey and aims to evaluate and improve abilities in perception of emotions; using emotion to facilitate thought; understanding emotions; and managing emotions. In the software, four characters represent the four branches of emotional intelligence and guide children through the ‘world of emotions’ using drawings, animations, music, sounds and verbal instructions. The software is comprised of two components, namely an assessment section (27 items) and a training sec…
A short survey on Lie theory and Finsler geometry
2017
The aim of this chapter is to provide readers with a common thread to the many topics dealt with in this book, which is intermediate and which aims at postgraduate students and young researchers, wishing to intrigue those who are not experts in some of the topics. We also hope that this book will contribute in encouraging new collaborations among disciplines which have stemmed from related problems. In this context, we take the opportunity to recommend the book by Hawkins [18]. A basic bibliography is outlined between the lines.
Incoherent dispersive shocks in the spectral evolution of random waves
2013
We predict theoretically and numerically the existence of incoherent dispersive shock waves. They manifest themselves as an unstable singular behavior of the spectrum of incoherent waves that evolve in a noninstantaneous nonlinear environment. This phenomenon of "spectral wave breaking" develops in the weakly nonlinear regime of the random wave. We elaborate a general theoretical formulation of these incoherent objects on the basis of a weakly nonlinear statistical approach: a family of singular integro-differential kinetic equations is derived, which provides a detailed deterministic description of the incoherent dispersive shock wave phenomenon.
Assessing hot and cool executive functions in preschoolers: affective flexibility predicts emotion regulation
2018
Affective flexibility (AF) is the ability to alternate between processing emotional and non-emotional information. This hot executive function has been understudied during early development. The fi...

Unravelling green regional industrial path development: Regional preconditions, asset modification and agency
2020
Abstract Regions across the world are searching for ways to fashion new green growth paths and to promote green shifts in mature industries. The article aims to explore conceptually and based on illustrative empirical examples from the literature how green restructuring unfolds in regions. We propose a framework that explicates how regional preconditions in form of pre-existing industrial structures, organisational support structures, institutional set-ups and natural assets are transformed into various types of green path development through agentic processes of asset modification.
The interplay between media-for-monitoring and media-for-searching: How news media trigger searches and edits in Wikipedia
2016
This study investigates how traditional news media and Internet services have become entangled in recipients’ habits of gathering information on current topics. Push media enable citizens to scan the issue environment while pull media enable them to seek out in-depth information if information needs have been elicited. Furthermore, content quality in many pull media may increase when more users generate content, removing flaws and adding information. We expected that TV and newspaper coverage of an issue will lead to increases in (a) searches for and (b) user edits in related articles in the online encyclopedia Wikipedia. Our findings reliably support the hypotheses, but the extent to whic…
A comparative empirical assessment of roundabouts operations in rural areas: impacts on congestion-specific vehicle speed profiles, pollutant and noi…
2020
Increasing concern about global warming and air quality has meant an increasing use of energetic and environmental indicators in roundabout design. The main objective of this paper is to compare different rural roundabouts in terms of traffic performance, pollutant and noise emissions through an integrated empirical assessment. Field measurements were carried out with a light duty vehicle in single-lane (SL), compact two-lane (CTL) and multi-lane (ML) roundabouts using Portable Emission Measurements Systems, OBD scan tool and Sound Level Meter, to measure real-world exhaust emissions, engine activity and acoustic data, respectively. Road traffic scene at roundabouts were obtained from video…
Portrayals of Large Corporations in the English and German Version of Wikipedia – Exploring Similarities and Differences
2016
High search results for Wikipedia articles in web search engines and the large number of Wikipedia articles about companies contribute to the online encyclopedia’s relevance for communication and reputation management. In this research, we compare Wikipedia articles of 30 US and 30 German corporations in both the English and German version of the online encyclopedia. Using content analysis, the articles’ structure, content and tone are analyzed and compared. Apart from broad similarities in regard to article structure, results reveal some striking differences between the versions. It shows that companies are portrayed more extensively in their domestic than in the foreign version of Wikiped…
