The existence of endogenous neural progenitors in the nigrostriatal system could represent a powerful tool for restorative therapies in Parkinson's disease. Sox-2 is a transcription factor expressed in pluripotent and adult stem cells, including neural progenitors. In the adult brain Sox-2 is expressed in the neurogenic niches. There is also widespread expression of Sox-2 in other brain regions, although the neurogenic potential outside the niches is uncertain. Background: Activins are members of the TGF-ß superfamily of growth factors. First, we identified by expression array screening that activin-B and follistatin are upregulated in human idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF). Next, we wanted to clarify their specific role in lung fibrosis formation. Methods: We used specific antibodies for activin-A and -B subunits and follistatin to measure and localize their levels in idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis and control lung biopsies. The value of automated DNA cytometry for differentiation of testis cancer was evaluated in 54 seminomas, 13 HCG-positive seminomas, and 48 embryonal carcinomas. Slices of paraffin embedded tissue were enzymatically digested and stained with Feulgen SITS after fixation on glass slides. Automated DNA cytometry was performed with a Modular Image Analysis Computer (MIAC). DNA histogram phenotpye and computed DNA indices were correlated with the different tumor types. The ratio of hypertriploid to hypotriploid increased from HCG-positive seminoma over embryonal carcinoma to seminoma. Testicular seminoma has in the past been considered to represent a germ cell tumor incapable of further differentiation. In recent years this view has been challenged on the basis of morphologic and chromosomal studies. We report on a male patient with exophthalmos of unclear etiology, basilar impression, syringohydromyelia and type II Arnold-Chiari malformation. Two diseases involving the orbital region were to be considered in differential diagnostic terms: endocrine orbitopathy and osseous orbit dysplasia. The typical physical appearance associated with basilar impression as well as suppurative keratitis in Lagophthalmos was striking. Tetraspasticity with pareses, bulbar symptoms, proximally pronounced muscular atrophy as well as a left hemihypesthesia was shown neurologically. When collection of ejaculated sperm samples is not possible, as is the case with wild species, the epididymides of sacrificed wild males become the only possible source of spermatozoa. Mature cauda epididymal spermatozoa display characteristics similar to those of ejaculated sperm cells. The present work proposes a sperm staining technique suitable for the morphometric evaluation of red deer epididymal sperm using a new computerized system. The immunocytochemical distribution of the putative satiety peptides bombesin (BBS) and cholecystokinin (CCK) were studied in the hypothalamic suprachiasmatic nuclei (SCN) of male and female Djungarian hamsters (Phodopus sungorus) held under either long (light/dark, LD 16:8 h) or short (LD 8:16) photoperiod. The animals were killed by perfusion with a fixative at the middle of the light period and the tissue was processed by routine immunohistochemical methods.
