Daily Profile in Melanopsin Transcripts Depends on Seasonal Lighting Conditions in the Rat Retina
2007
The retinal photopigment melanopsin (Opn4) mediates photoentrainment of the circadian system. In the present study, seasonal regulation of the melanopsin gene was investigated in comparison with the arylalkylamine N-acetyltransferase (AA-NAT) gene as an indicator of retinal pacemaker output. For this purpose, the daily profiles in the amount of melanopsin mRNA and AA-NAT mRNA were monitored under 8 : 16 h light/dark, 12 : 12 h light/dark and 16 : 8 h light/dark photoperiods using real-time polymerase chain reaction analysis. We found that, under all of the lighting regimes, melanopsin and AA-NAT expression oscillated with a peak around dark onset and the middle of the dark phase, respective…
Pegylated liposomal doxorubicin in the management of ovarian cancer
2014
Ovarian cancer is the leading cause of death among gynecological tumors. Carboplatin/paclitaxel represents the cornerstone of front-line treatment. Instead, there is no consensus for management of recurrent/progressive disease, in which pegylated liposomal doxorubicin (PLD) ± carboplatin is widely used. We performed a systematic review and metaanalysis to evaluate impact of PLD-based compared with no-PLD-based regimens in the ovarian cancer treatment. Data were extracted from randomized trials comparing PLD-based treatment to any other regimens in the January 2000-January 2013 time-frame. Study end-points were overall survival (OS), progression free survival (PFS), response rate (RR), CA125…

PTEN Deletion in Adult Mice Induces Hypoinsulinemia With Concomitant Low Glucose Levels
2022
The PI3K/AKT pathway, negatively regulated by PTEN, plays a paramount role in glucose metabolism regulation due to its activation by the insulin receptor signaling pathway. We generated a PTEN-KO mouse to evaluate the systemic effect of the overactivation of the PI3K/AKT pathway in insulin signaling and glucose homeostasis. Our results demonstrate that PTEN-KO mice show very low glucose levels in the fasted state, which poorly respond to glucose and pyruvate administration. Insulinemia decreased without alterations in pancreatic islets. Among the possible reasons, we uncover the deregulation of the expression of proximal tubule glucose transporter and consequent glycosuria. Moreover, we evi…
Metagenomics of the Mucosal Microbiota of European Eels
2014
ABSTRACT European eels are an economically important and threatened species that are prone to rapid collapse in farm conditions. Using metagenomics, we show that the eel mucosal microbiota has specific features distinguishing it from the surrounding aquatic community. This is a first step in dissecting the resident microbiota of this critical barrier that may have implications for maintenance of healthy eel populations.
Phenotypic study by numerical taxonomy of strains belonging to the genus Aeromonas.
2002
Aims: This study was undertaken to cluster and identify a large collection of Aeromonas strains. Methods and Results: Numerical taxonomy was used to analyse phenotypic data obtained on 54 new isolates taken from water, fish, snails, sputum and 99 type and reference strains. Each strain was tested for 121 characters but only the data for 71 were analysed using the `SSM' and `SJ' coefficients, and the UPGMA clustering algorithm. At SJ values of ≥ 81·6% the strains clustered into 22 phenons which were identified as Aer. jandaei, Aer. hydrophila, Aer. encheleia, Aer. veronii biogroup veronii, Aer. trota, Aer. caviae, Aer. eucrenophila, Aer. ichthiosmia, Aer. sobria, Aer. allosaccharophila, Ae…
PD-L1 and PD-1 expression in thyroid follicular epithelial dysplasia : Hashimoto thyroiditis related atypia and potential papillary carcinoma precurs…
2022
Programmed cell death ligand (PD-L1)/PD-1 expression has been studied in a variety of cancers and blockage of PD-L1/PD-1 pathway is a cornerstone of immunotherapy. We studied PD-L1/PD-1 immunohistochemical expression in 47 thyroid gland specimens in groups of (1) Hashimoto thyroiditis (HT) only; (2) HT and follicular epithelial dysplasia (FED); and (3) HT, FED, and papillary thyroid carcinoma (PTC). PD-1 positivity was found in immune cells, namely in lymphocytes, macrophages, and plasma cells with mean values for lymphocytes and macrophages 9% in HT group, 4% in FED group, and 4% in PTC group. PD-L1 positivity was identified in both immune cells and in the normal epithelial cells. In the H…

Nonequilibrium depletion interactions in active microrheology.
2017
Entropic depletion forces arise between mesoscopic bodies that are immersed in a suspension of macromolecules, such as colloid-polymer mixtures. Here we consider the case of a driven colloidal probe in the presence of another, passive colloidal particle, both solvated in an ideal bath of small spherical particles. We calculate the nonequilibrium forces mediated by the depletants on the two colloidal particles within a dynamical superposition approximation (DSA) scheme. In order to assess the quality of this approximation, and to obtain the colloidal microstructure around the driven probe, we corroborate our theoretical results with Brownian dynamics simulations.
