Carcinoid tumors are rare and slowly growing neuroendocrine tumors of the foregut, midgut and hindgut. Drug therapy is of special importance in patients with inoperable metastasising disease. This palliative therapy is aimed at reduction of the hormone-dependent symptoms and inhibition of tumor growth. Somatostatin analogues, alpha-interferon and various chemotherapeutic agents are used for this purpose. Drug therapy can be supplemented by surgical and radiological intervention through interdisciplinary cooperation of the surgeon, radiologist, endocrinologist and gastroenterologist.

Head and neck paragangliomas are highly vascularized neuroendocrine tumors derived from the extra-adrenal paraganglia of the autonomic nervous system. These tumors may occur either sporadically or in the context of a hereditary familial tumor syndrome, and multifocal presentations are observed, particularly in hereditary cases. Hereditary paragangliomas are mostly caused by mutations in the succinate dehydrogenase complex genes. The aim of the study was to evaluate real time in vivo molecular imaging of somatostatin receptors (sstrs) using a handheld miniaturized confocal laser scan microscope (CLM) in conjunction with fluorescein-labeled octreotate (OcF) in healthy mice and murine models of neuroendocrine tumors. For CLM a small rigid probe (diameter 7 mm) with an integrated single line laser (488 nm) was used (optical slice thickness 7 μm; lateral resolution 0.7 μm). Somatostatin-receptor scintigraphy has become an obligatory molecular imaging method in the management of patients with neuroendocrine tumors when metastatic disease is suspected. Using positron emission tomography and new somatostatin analogues, sensitivity of somatostatin receptor imaging has further increased.
