Celiac disease and selective immunoglobulin A deficiency

Selective IgA deficiency was observed in 12 of 688 (1.7%) patients with celiac disease who were clinically undistinguishable from patients with celiac disease with normal IgA levels. This high prevalence of IgA deficiency in patients with celiac disease makes serum IgA assay advisable when screening for celiac disease is performed by measurement of antigliadin antibodies or anti-IgA endomysium antibodies. Similarly, subjects with IgA deficiency should be considered at risk of celiac disease.

BACKGROUND & AIMS: The frequency of elevated serum pancreatic enzymes in patients with celiac disease (CD) is unknown. The aim of this study was to evaluate the serum levels of pancreatic enzymes in CD patients. METHODS: Serum pancreatic isoamylase and lipase levels were assayed in 90 adult and 112 pediatric consecutive CD patients at diagnosis and after 12 months of gluten-free diet (GFD). Background Celiac disease (CD) diagnosis is becoming more difficult as patients with no intestinal histology lesions may also be suffering from CD. Aim To evaluate the diagnostic accuracy of antiendomysium (EmA) assay in the culture medium of intestinal biopsies for CD diagnosis. Recent advances have revealed significant differences in the pathogenesis of inflammatory myopathies. To determine whether different patterns of macrophage differentiation are a useful tool to delineate the major groups of inflammatory myopathies, the muscle biopsies of 11 patients with dermatomyositis and 12 patients with polymyositis were studied using different macrophage markers. Intramuscular collagen in a slow (m. soleus) and a fast (m. rectus femoris) skeletal muscle was studied by biochemical, morphometric, and immunohistochemical methods. Wistar white rats of 1, 4, 10, and 24 months were used as experimental animals. Our aim was to evaluate the effects of life-long physical training (treadmill running, 5 days a week for 1, 3, 9, and 23 months depending on the age attained). The appearance of collagen around individual fast twitch (FT) and slow twitch (ST) muscle fibres was investigated in skeletal muscles with different contractile properties using endurance trained and untrained rats as experimental animals.
