Abstract In the study the results of investigations are presented aimed at determining such values of the operating parameters for which the change of the hydrodynamic regime occurs from the gas continuous flow (GCF) to the pulsing flow (PF). Nitrogen, helium and argon were used as the gas phase while the liquid phase was formed by the aqueous solutions of the alcohols C 1 –C 4 of the concentrations which ensured the foaming of the system. Thus a wide range of physicochemical properties of the system was covered in the experiments. Abstract In the present study the results of experiments have been presented whose aim was to determine the values of liquid holdup as well as gas pressure drop through the packing for systems foaming under the pulse flow regime. On the basis of 245 experimental points for the pulse flow regime the verification of the models describing the hydrodynamics of the system has been performed. Attention was focused on the models of Benkrid et al. (Chem. Eng. Sci. 52 (1997) 4021), Pina et al. (AIChE J. 47 (2001) 19) and Fourar et al. (Chem. Eng. Sci. 56 (2001) 5987). Development of a Higee bioreactor (HBR) for production of polyhydroxyalkanoate: Hydrodynamics, gas–liquid mass transfer and fermentation studies

Abstract This study addresses the hydrodynamics and mass transfer characterisation of a Higee bioreactor (HBR) for application to polyhydroxyalkanoate (PHA) production from Pseudomonas putida KT2442 fermentation. The motivation for this work is to address the potential oxygen transfer limitations which can severely impede the progress of this aerobic fermentation process and reduce PHA productivity in conventional bioreactors. It is shown that a maximum of 2.5 transfer units can be achieved in an oxygen-stripping operation where the presence of packing, higher rotor speeds, higher air flowrates and lower liquid flowrates all have a positive influence on the number of transfer units (NTU). An integrated multiobjective design tool for process design

An integrated multiobjective design tool has been developed for chemical process design. This tool combines the rigorous process calculations of the BALAS process simulator and the interactive multiobjective optimization method NIMBUS. With this design tool, the designer can consider several conflicting performance criteria simultaneously. The interactive nature of this tool allows the designer to learn about the behavior of the problem. To illustrate the possibilities of this design tool, two case studies are considered. One of them is related to paper making while the other one is related to power plants.

Importance of iron and aluminium in rapid and slow combustion of peat

Abstract The effects of Fe and Al on peat combustion and the formation of nitrogen oxides were studied under conditions of rapid combustion in an entrained flow reactor, and under conditions of slow combustion in a thermobalance and a differential scanning calorimeter. Iron had a strong catalytic effect on both the slow and rapid combustion, and it decreased the ratio of N2O to NO in the combustion gases. A decrease in the content of inorganic compounds decreased reactivity, probably because of the decrease in iron content. Abstract The purpose of this work is to identify and analyze consumer resistance in order to understand this concept in the area of resistant behavior. The paper converges on studying the resistance to innovation from a theoretical perspective and to show it importance in innovation process. The paper concludes bydescribing the complexity of resistance to innovation, its forms and effects on the behavior of consumers and market. Although most authors focus their research on positive adoption decisions, this paper instead focus on developing insight into the relatively underdeveloped area of resistant behavior literature by presenting key concepts of resistance to innovation.
