Effective strategies for promoting physical activity through the use of digital media among school-age children: A systematic review

2021

Digital media are widespread among school-age children, and their incorrect use may lead to an increase in sedentary levels and the consequences associated with it. There are still few studies that have investigated whether physical activity levels could be increased through their use. The aim of this study was to systematically review the scientific literature in order to identify whether digital strategies and technologies are capable of increasing the level of physical activity. A literature search was performed using the following databases: Pubmed, Scopus, and Web of Science. The main outcomes evaluated the increase in physical activity levels, the number of steps, and the reduction of…

Health Implications of Judo Training

2021

Although current physical activity (PA) guidelines regarding aerobic and anaerobic training are helpful for the population at large, many individuals prefer to engage in alternative forms of PA such as combat sports. As both a martial art and sport, judo is a physically demanding form of PA that potentially offers a novel experience, consequently leading to greater PA adherence. This study aimed to thoroughly search the existing literature to determine the health benefits of judo-specific training. PubMed and Web of Science were searched for original research studies. Only peer-reviewed studies that examined the effects of judo training in males and females aged 18–35 were included in the s…

Glycosaminoglycans from Animal Tissue Foods and Gut Health

2013

Glycosaminoglycans (GAGs) are a special group of carbohydrates with structures that clearly distinguishes them from glycoproteins, and exert biological effects beyond basic nutrition. The complex nature of cell-surface and GAG-related structures present in extracellular matrix has led to the neglect of this potential therapeutic site for a long time. Consideration about carbohydrates only as energy source has become reoriented because of their pivotal roles in many biological processes; however, scarce advances have been made on GAG characterization in foods. This review focuses on the potential consequences of dietary GAGs on human intestinal health, considering nutritional aspects and bio…

Photocatalytic Processes in Membrane Reactors

2010

Conversion and degradation processes of various substrates in various types of matrices using both artificial and solar light are today very attractive by considering the scarcity and the expensiveness of the conventional energy sources. Coupling of membrane with light has shown to be very powerful and promising hybrid process, especially because a synergistic effect has been often observed. Some examples of reactions carried out to produce useful chemicals or to degrade noxious species in the framework of the green chemistry approach are reported. Fundamentals of heterogeneous photocatalysis, in general, and photocatalytic reactions in membrane reactors, in particular, are treated with a f…

Decoupled Control Scheme of Grid-Connected Split-Source Inverters

2017

During the last few years, single-stage power conversion systems has undergone a fast evolution to replace the conventional two-stage architecture, which includes a front-end dc-dc boost converter (BC) and an output voltage source inverter (VSI) [1]. This evolution has grown up to improve the overall system performance in terms of reducing its size, weight, and complexity. Most of these single-stage topologies and their different modulation schemes have been reviewed in [1]. Among these different single-stage options, the split-source inverter (SSI), shown in Figure 1, has been recently proposed in [2] as a single-stage dc-ac power converter topology to overcome some demerits in the other s…

Are local food chains more sustainable than global food chains? Considerations for assessment

2016

© 2016 by the authors; licensee MDPI, Basel, Switzerland. This paper summarizes the main findings of the GLAMUR project which starts with an apparently simple question: is "local" more sustainable than "global"? Sustainability assessment is framed within a post-normal science perspective, advocating the integration of public deliberation and scientific research. The assessment spans 39 local, intermediate and global supply chain case studies across different commodities and countries. Assessment criteria cover environmental, economic, social, health and ethical sustainability dimensions. A closer view of the food system demonstrates a highly dynamic local-global continuum where actors, whil…

A machine learning approach to determine airport asphalt concrete layer moduli using heavy weight deflectometer data

2021

An integrated approach based on machine learning and data augmentation techniques has been developed in order to predict the stiffness modulus of the asphalt concrete layer of an airport runway, from data acquired with a heavy weight deflectometer (HWD). The predictive model relies on a shallow neural network (SNN) trained with the results of a backcalculation, by means of a data augmentation method and can produce estimations of the stiffness modulus even at runway points not yet sampled. The Bayesian regularization algorithm was used for training of the feedforward backpropagation SNN, and a k-fold cross-validation procedure was implemented for a fair performance evaluation. The testing p…

Business Ethics as a Sustainability Challenge: Higher Education Implications

2018

Recent financial scandals worldwide have intensified concern for business (and especially accounting) ethics. Hence, under an overall economic and social sustainability approach, it is crucial to improve the effectiveness of business ethics and corporate social responsibility (CSR) education, in terms of its impact on business students&rsquo

Universities' Reporting on SDGs: Using THE Impact Rankings to Model and Measure Their Contribution to Sustainability

2021

Higher education institutions (HEIs) have voiced growing concerns about sustainability issues since Agenda 2030 was approved, but this is not enough for societal stakeholders seeking and delivering innovation and excellence. The 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) were adopted by all UN Member States in 2015 as a universal call to action, and pose a challenge for HEIs as for the efforts made to fulfill them and knowing how to assess their performance. However, the metric management system implemented by HEIs quickly led to rankings emerging, which compare HEIs to metrics not related to the sustainability dimensions of the 17 SDGs. The main aim of the paper is to assess the level of repo…
