This paper focuses on the role dictionaries play in a translation situation. This role is analysed in terms of the tenets of the Function Theory of Lexicography, which proposes that users do not have needs in general but punctual needs in specific situations. For example, translators of accounting texts need insertable equivalents whose meanings and language behaviour are clearly described. Furthermore, translators also need contextual data on domain-specific consensual usage. The construction of the Accounting Dictionaries and Diccionarios de Contabilidad reveals that the Function Theory offers theoretical and practical solutions for constructing dictionaries that target user needs in a pr…

2016
Genres in young learner L2 English writing: A genre typology for the TRAWL (Tracking Written Learner Language) corpus
2023
In learner corpus research, it is well known that one should control for genre when collecting and analysing written L2 (second language) English data, as genre is one factor that has been shown to account for language variation. This article presents a genre typology for annotating learner texts from the lower secondary level in Norway (ages 13-15, school years 8-10). The data are drawn from TRAWL (Tracking Written Learner Language), a new learner corpus currently under compilation. As the TRAWL corpus will be openly available for research, it is important that the typology is clearly described, which is the primary aim of the present study.

The influence of English on Norwegian morphology: aspects of a contemporary development
2006
Masteroppgave i engelsk, Høkskolen i Agder, Kristiansand Three tentative hypotheses are suggested and tested in this thesis:1. That compounds, clips words and the genitive case are areas of Norwegian morphology which in fact are realms of uncertainty for users of the Norwegian language 2. That the uncertainty is not solely a result of English influence 3. That the uncertainty to some extent is due to insufficient knowledge of Norwegian orthography and morphology among Norwegians. With a view to investigating current attitudes within an academic setting to English influence on Norwegian morphology, a synchronic survey was carried out at Agder University College in Kristiansand. During the au…
