Introductory Remarks: Population Biology, the Scientific Interface to Species Conservation

1991

Species conservation is one of the most challenging problems of present biological research. The scientific discipline “population biology” covers — with its methods and theoretical background — a large proportion of the tasks which are necessary to make proposals for practical conservation projects.

The Scientific Context

2018

We review three important processes: the foundation of national mathematical societies, in particular, the London Mathematical Society and the Societe Mathematique de France; the creation of research mathematical journals, focusing on Acta Mathematica and its founder Gosta Mittag-Leffler; and the organization of mathematics at international level, discussing the origins of the International Congresses of Mathematicians.

Measurement Advances and Challenges in Competency Assessment in Higher Education

2016

Domain-specific and generic competencies have become target outcomes of students' learning in higher education, and competency assessment plays an increasingly important role in higher education on an international scale. Recent reviews of the literature show that there is still a substantial lack of research on assessment practices in higher education, especially on measurement models and valid instruments for competency assessment. This special issue provides an overview of current international research and innovative developments in this research area, covering a broad range of assessment perspectives, addressing prevalent shortcomings of educational assessment practices, and presenting…

The CINHEKS Research Design: Taking Stock and Moving Forward

2016

Comparative research design, at its best, in an international project focused on a complex topic, is a dynamic, iterative and on-going process. In the CINHEKS study this proved to be the case, both by design and in several ways our team did not, nor could not, anticipate. The tensions between purposeful planning, inevitable setbacks and serendipity turned out to be one of the most interesting aspects of CINHEKS and the purpose of this chapter is to take a step back, well outside methodological convention, to holistically and critically reflect on the lessons learned during the planning and execution of the CINHEKS comparative study. This chapter is an analysis of our efforts regarding the c…

NanoBioInterface: a multidisciplinary challenge

2009

Nanotechnologies are being applied to many fields of science and engineering and represent a broad spectrum of methods, some of which have been known for a long time. However, the public interest as well as the promotion of this topic by funding agencies has led in some cases to a simple renaming of

End-user ethics teaching: issues and a solution based on universalization

2005

The ethical aspects of computing have gained increasing attention at the professional level of education in universities. As a result, several works have been produced relating to computer ethics education at this level. However, the ever-increasing role and usage of computer technology means that ethical education related to computing is also necessary for non-professional/non-major computing/information systems students. Due to the differences between professional and non-professional education in terms of substance, along with pragmatic reasons (e.g. lack of resources), the ordinary end-users need a different educational program. This paper first explores issues (i.e. challenges and prob…

Modeling and Measuring University Students’ Subject-Specific Competencies in the Domain of Business and Economics – The ILLEV Project

2013

Current research provides very little empirical evidence regarding the influence of academic higher education on the development of professionalism among students. Over the course of the reform of the higher education systems in Europe (Bologna declaration) this issue has become increasingly important.

Open Access Publishing as an Incorporator of Research and Innovation Cycle

2005

Even though basic research doesn’t often result in immediately usable products, it plays an essential role in technological innovations, as it has formed the basis for many groundbreaking advances in product development over the decades. For instance, Maxwell’s 19 century research into electricity and magnetic fields (Copeland, 2000) has resulted in a vast array of products that many of us take for granted in modern daily life. And Turing’s intuitive consideration of the way mathematicians think paved the way for the development of computers (Friedel, 2002) and eventually to many digital technologies. A multitude of similar examples that demonstrate the connection between ideas emerging fro…
