Strategy training in ESP acquisition processes: some criteria

Este trabajo debate y propone cuáles son los criterios necesarios para establecer un programa de entrenamiento de aprendices de una lengua extranjera (inglés) según los supuestos de las estrategias de aprendizaje como área de estudio, dentro del campo de la adquisición de lenguas extranjeras y segundas lenguas. This work discusses and proposes which are the minimal necessary criteria to establish a training program for learners of a foreign language (English) following the principles of learning strategies as a field of study within the wider field of foreign and second language acquisition.
A Design-Oriented Analysis of Multimodality in English as a Foreign Language

This empirical article investigates multimodality in English as a foreign language, both as seen in the use of multimodal texts as artefacts and pedagogical texts for learning, and through an analysis of the multimodal learning designs. We present observations from a year 10 classroom in Norway that worked with the novel The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian (Alexie, 2007). We explore a four-week teaching sequence, asking how different modes were involved when the educator designed literacy events around the novel, and how multimodality is present in the students’ meaning making. According to Serbessa (2006) there is a tension between Western pedagogy, in particular child-centred learning, and traditional Ethiopian approaches to teaching. In this study, this tension is examined through the teaching methods used and the resources teachers have at their disposal. The teachers are herein viewed as curriculum leaders, contrasting with the preconception that managers are leaders of a curriculum (Hannay & Seller, 1991). Norms and Ideologies of Academic Writing on an International Master’s Programme in Finland

This ethnographically-oriented study followed the experiences of six (later four) students on an international master’s programme in Finland. Programmes such as this combine culturally, linguistically and often academically diverse students, using English as a lingua franca for course completion and evaluation, rather than the official language of the institution. This paper contributes to the growing field of research on English as a business lingua franca (BELF) and extends discussion on the role of culture and cultural knowledge in business interactions. It aims to provide insights into the relationship between cultural knowledge and professionals’ management of BELF interactions.
