What Gender-Neutral Legislation Owes to Grammar: The Concept of ‘Gender’ in Legal English and the Italian Guidelines for Use of Gender-Sensitive Lang…
2022
Gender-neutral language, also called non-sexist, genderinclusive, or non-gender-specific language, refers to language that includes words or expressions that cannot be taken to refer to one gender only. As a matter of fact, languages vary widely in terms of gender systems showing differences in the number of classes, underlying assignment rules and how and where gender is marked. In everyday speech, the word gender is usually associated with the biological and social differences between men and women (as in the case of Italian), and the view that grammatical gender mirrors natural gender is still evident in the terms masculine, feminine, and neuter that are used to label individual gender d…
Francis Osborne. Repubblicanesimo e Ragion di Stato durante la Rivoluzione Inglese
2009
Francis Osborne (1593-1659) was the celebrated author of The Advice to a Son, a very popular book in his days. He also wrote some tracts and pamphlets during the so called “Engagement Controversy”, that led to the publication of many republican writings to support the new regime. Osborn’s intellectual and ideological contribution was peculiar, because his condemn of tyranny was carried on in a political language that used Machiavellian ideas, the republican concept of liberty and the new and well-known expression “reason of state”.
Shape-Shifting Tales. Michèle Roberts's Monstrous Women
2010
The book provides an analysis of the representation of women’s bodies and their monstrous metamorphoses in selected short stories by contemporary English writer Michèle Roberts. The author explores the relationship between traditional fairy tales such as the Grimm Brothers’ and Charles Perrault’s, the lives of female saints and Roberts’s counter-narratives, focussing on the analysis of images of sublimed fleshliness and of acts of monstrous violence on the body. The book takes into account relevant Women’s Studies criticism regarding the mother-daughter relationship, as Roberts’s stories question the role of mother figures in traditional fairy tales and hagiography and at the same time rewo…
The Fifteen Signs before Doomsday in Cotton Vespasian D. xiv: Role and Contextualisation
2010
The Coronation Parliament of John III Sobieski in French-Language Reports Sent to London
2021
The coronation parliament in the former Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth was always an exceptional event not only for the newly elected monarch but also for diplomats from foreign courts who reported about its proceedings. In their reports, they tried to provide as much information as possible, not only political but also moral, social, and related to the ceremony. Of course, such material needs careful analysis, as the diplomats, othen unfamiliar with the reality of the Polish-Lithuanian state, misrepresented the facts or presented them in a wrong context. The analysed manuscript accounts from the coronation parliament of John III Sobieski probably played the role of an additional source of …
The social life of emotive interjections in spoken British English
2019
This paper explores the discursive use of selected emotive interjections (Ow!, Ouch!; Ugh!, Yuck!; Whoops!, Whoopsadaisy!) in spoken British English. The data (drawn from the Spoken BNC2014) are coded for age, gender, social grade and type of dyad to identify potential factors governing the discursive use of these interjections. Based on 140 relevant tokens, the results suggest that: 1) The individual interjections vary significantly regarding how frequently they are found in discursive uses (p<0.001***). 2) Whoopsadaisy! is not attested in discursive uses. 3) Young female speakers behave differently from the other speaker groups in that they use emotive interjections discursively signif…

Translation and terminology. On two Spanish versions (Madrid, 1800) of Dumarsais’ Logique
2013
This article is the Spanish version of “Traduction et terminologie. A propos de deux versions espagnoles (Madrid, 1800) de la Logique de Dumarsais” by Brigitte Lépinette. It was not published on the print version of MonTI for reasons of space. The online version of MonTI does not suffer from these limitations, and this is our way of promoting plurilingualism. Framed in the field of philosophical translation (lato sensu), this article deals with two different versions of Logique by Dumarsais (Paris, 1730) published in Spain. We show that these two “Lógicas”, translated by two different persons, who also had distinct purposes as is evidenced by their respective bibliographical context and met…
