Ambienti, culture, patrimoni. Politiche e pratiche di tutela - Abstract

The complexity and instability of the current historical situation that characterizes the social and political life of our country, as well as the rapid socio-cultural transformations imposed by globalization, lead us to believe that an articulated and frequent confrontation between social sciences and public administration managers and bureaucratic systems is increasingly necessary and useful to respond to the new needs in the field of territorial and landscape planning. The critical issues regarding the management, enhancement and safeguarding of protected areas (be they environmental, landscape or archaeological) have inevitably been overshadowed and in some cases aggravated by the arriv…

Concentric force enhancement during human movement

2001

In order to understand the possible mechanisms contributing to enhanced concentric performance in stretch-shortening cycle exercises in vivo the present study examined knee extension torque, EMG activity and fascicle length of the vastus lateralis muscle in maximal and submaximal human movements. Maximal concentric knee extensions (120 s-1) were done after pre-stretch and pre-isometric conditions by nine volunteers. During shortening at the knee angle of 115 (180 = extended) the knee extension torque was found to be greater in pre-stretch condition (272 vs. 248 Nm, p < 0.05) although the torque level prior to shortening was smaller than in pre-isometric condition (268 vs. 314 Nm, p< 0.05…

Laser assisted particle removal from Silicon wafers

2023

We have studied the removal of submicrometer particles from silicon wafers by the steam laser cleaning (SLC) and dry laser cleaning (DLC) processes. These processes are currently being investigated as new promising cleaning technologies for complementing traditional methods in industrial applications. For SLC a thin liquid layer (e.g. a water-alcohol mixture) is condensed onto the substrate, and is subsequently evaporated by irradiating the surface with a short laser pulse. The DLC process, on the other hand, relies only on the laser pulse, without application of a vapor jet. Using well-characterized monodisperse polystyrene and silica particles as well as irregularly shaped alumina particl…

Orientation and molecular contacts of melatonin confined into AOT and lecithin reversed micellar systems

2008

Abstract The state of increasing amounts of melatonin (MLT) confined in dry AOT or lecithin reversed micelles dispersed in CCl 4 has been investigated by UV–vis and 1 H NMR spectroscopies. The experimental results are consistent with MLT totally entrapped in reversed micelles, as a consequence of specific melatonin/surfactant interaction; the main driving force of the MLT solubilization in the core of reversed micelles is the establishment of H-bonding between the MLT NH groups (both indolic and amidic) and the head group of surfactants. The short contacts deduced from intermolecular NOEs are accounted for by favourable interactions between the surfactant's polar head and the H7–NH–H2 fragm…

Fast Photomosaic

2005

Photomosaic is a technique which transforms an input image into a rectangular grid of thumbnail images preserving the overall appearance. The typical photomosaic algorithm searches from a large database of images one picture that approximates a block of pixels in the main image. Since the quality of the output depends on the size of the database, it turns out that the bottleneck in each photomosaic algorithm is the searching process. In this paper we present a technique to speed-up this critical phase using the Antipole Tree Data Structure. This improvement allows the use of larger databases without requiring much longer processing time.

Suppression and Replacement Gene Therapy for Autosomal Dominant Disease in a Murine Model of Dominant Retinitis Pigmentosa

2011

For dominantly inherited disorders development of gene therapies, targeting the primary genetic lesion has been impeded by mutational heterogeneity. An example is rhodopsin-linked autosomal dominant retinitis pigmentosa with over 150 mutations in the rhodopsin gene. Validation of a mutation-independent suppression and replacement gene therapy for this disorder has been undertaken. The therapy provides a means of correcting the genetic defect in a mutation-independent manner thereby circumventing the mutational diversity. Separate adeno-associated virus (AAV) vectors were used to deliver an RNA interference (RNAi)-based rhodopsin suppressor and a codon-modified rhodopsin replacement gene res…

Directionlets: Anisotropic Multidirectional representation with separable filtering

2006

In spite of the success of the standard wavelet transform (WT) in image processing in recent years, the efficiency of its representation is limited by the spatial isotropy of its basis functions built in the horizontal and vertical directions. One-dimensional (1-D) discontinuities in images (edges and contours) that are very important elements in visual perception, intersect too many wavelet basis functions and lead to a nonsparse representation. To efficiently capture these anisotropic geometrical structures characterized by many more than the horizontal and vertical directions, a more complex multidirectional (M-DIR) and anisotropic transform is required. We present a new lattice-based pe…

PATRIMONIO STORICO SICILIANO: LE TORRI COSTIERE

2016
