Multivariate independent prognostic factors in endometrial carcinoma: A clinicopathologic study in 181 patients: 10 years experience at the Departmen…

2003

The aim of this study was to evaluate the biologic outcome of endometrial carcinomas as compared to clinical and pathologic parameters and to identify multivariate independent prognostic factors. Charts were abstracted from patients with endometrial carcinoma from 1985 to 1995. Data on clinicopathologic variables, adjuvant treatment, site of recurrence, and survival were collected. chi2 test was used to test association between variables. Kaplan-Maier method was used for survival analysis and Cox proportional hazards model for multiple regression analysis. Univariate analysis revealed that FIGO stage, tumor grade, depth of myometrial invasion, biochemical analysis of progesterone receptor s…

Aneurysmal bone cyst of the spine in adult patients: A systematic review and comparison of primary vs secondary lesions.

2021

Background: Spine aneurysmal bone cysts (ABCs) rarely occur in adults. Primary and secondary lesions may show some differences and require appropriate treatments. Objective: To systematically review the literature on adult spine ABCs. Methods: PubMed, EMBASE, Scopus, and Web-of-Science were searched. Clinical-radiological features, treatments, and outcomes were analyzed and compared between primary vs secondary adult spine ABCs. Results: We included 80 studies comprising 220 patients. Primary spine ABCs were more frequent (76.4%). Main symptoms were lower-back-pain (42.8%) and motor deficits (31.2%). Tumors were mostly thoracic (31.4%) or cervical (26.8%), showing lytic (70.4%) and/or cysti…

Lipoprotein(a) and aortic valve stenosis: A casual or causal association?

2022

Abstract Aims This review aims to provide an update of available methods for imaging calcification activity and potential therapeutic options. Data Synthesis: Aortic valve calcification represents the most common heart valve condition requiring treatment among adults in Western societies. No medical therapies are proven to be effective in treating symptoms or reducing disease progression. Therefore, surgical or transcatheter aortic valve replacement remains the only available treatment option. Elevated circulating concentrations of lipoprotein(a) is strongly associated with degenerative aortic stenosis. This relationship was first observed in prospective observational studies, and the causa…

Tumor Vascularity—A Novel Prognostic Factor in Advanced Cervical Carcinoma

1995

Objective: In the search for the optimal treatment of advanced cervical cancer, the identification of valid prognostic factors obtainable without histopathologic investigation of the entire tumor and the locoregional lymph nodes is of paramount interest. Tumor microvessel density has recently been demonstrated to correlate strongly with disease aggressiveness in breast cancer and other malignancies. Methods: We established a computerized image analysis system to quantify tumor microvascularity by using the closest-individual method, which determines the distribution of distances from random points within the tumor to the closest microvessel (DTCMV). Tumor microvascularity was assessed in pa…

Bilateral photoplethysmography studies of the leg arterial stenosis.

2005

A newly developed portable multi-channel photoplethysmography (PPG) device has been used for comparative studies of 20 healthy control subjects and 45 patients with diagnosed arterial stenosis in a leg. The peripheral blood pulsations were detected simultaneously at four body sites-the same fingers and toes of both arms and legs. The PPG pulses recorded at the periphery of the stenotic leg, if compared with those of the healthy leg, were much weaker, with delayed arrival as a consequence of increased pulse wave transit time (PWTT) due to higher vascular resistance. The specific PWTT delays for the occluded legs were in the range of 20-80 ms, while in the case of healthy subjects the leg PPG…

Reconstructive plastic surgery in the treatment of vulvar carcinomas

2005

Abstract Objective The results obtained using plastic surgery reconstruction in 207 patients with a primary or recurrent vulvar carcinoma were analyzed with regard to the surgical procedures applied, pre-treatment and post-operative findings, along with the long-term oncological disease course. Study design Standardized data concerning the surgical procedures applied and clinical factors were collected in a databank and statistically analyzed. Results The flaps employed were termed either ‘local' (cutaneous or fasciocutaneous; n =84) or ‘regional' (myocutaneous, n =123). For local flaps, the rate of secondary healing was 31%, dropping to 20% for regional flaps. Such healing disturbances oft…

Combined therapy with acyclovir and adenosine arabinoside in herpes simplex encephalitis.

1987

We report a case of herpes simplex encephalitis (HSE) with initial coma and severe left-sided hemiparesis in which combined treatment with adenine arabinoside and acyclovir was followed by complete recovery. This favorable result is discussed in view of the literature of HSE treatment including experimental studies on antiviral activity of both drugs. Combined treatment may be useful in severe cases of HSE.

Unexpected death for takayasu aortitis associated with coronary ostial stenosis

2015

The differential diagnosis of vasculitis is often a difficult task due to the frequent morphological similarities that various vasculitic syndromes express when the heart is the target organ. The more the lesions are limited to the arterial tree with absent or almost silent coronary events, the less specific the anatomical and clinical frameworks. To create a series of clinical records and on the basis of these assumptions, the authors report a case concerning the sudden death of a 43-year-old woman which occurred while an ergonometric test was being carried out 28 days after the onset of the symptoms. A subsequent postmortem investigation/autopsy enabled us to detect a granulomatous aortit…
