Higher Education in France has undergone deep reaching changes within the last ten years. Enrollment has increased rather fast, much more than the European average (plus 60 versus plus 30 per cent). Universities have diversified their streams, thereby blurring the traditional division between them and the non university sector. The professional content of studies has been reinforced. Social demand explains part of theses changes but the main causal factor is a strongly volontary public policy. Regional mobility of the French post secondary graduate students entering the labour market

With the innovations of the national statistical system, the study of the geographical mobility during the transition between school and employment is now possible. This article presents the various regional migratory situations at the end of the Nineties, and the main transformations that has occurred during the last fifteen years. Knowing better the labour migration patterns of new graduates allows us to characterize the various relations that exist between academic background and employment at the regional scale. It appears that there is not an obvious relation between the quality of the transition from school to the labour market and the various regional migratory situations.
