Enteral feeding policies for extremely low birth weight infants. A survey in 74 Italian neonatal intensive cAre units
1999
Background: Enterai feeding for infants with birth weight1000 g (ELBWI) is still a controversial issue. The aim of the present survey was to ascertain the attitudes of Italian neonatal intensive care units (NICUs) regarding this point. Method: A questionnaire, with multiple choice answers, regarding the timing of enteral feeding, its progression, the different techniques utilised, the eventual use of fortifiers and the interrupting criteria, was mailed to 92 Italian NICUs. Results: 74 NICUs all over the country participated in the study.1153 ELBWI were hospitalised in 1996 in these Units. Enterai feeding for babies between 501 g and 750 g is started on the 1st day of life in 23.3% of the NI…
Fauna Europaea: Hymenoptera - Apocrita (excl. Ichneumonoidea)
2015
Fauna Europaea provides a public web-service with an index of scientific names (including important synonyms) of all living European land and freshwater animals, their geographical distribution at country level (up to the Urals, excluding the Caucasus region), and some additional information. The Fauna Europaea project covers about 230,000 taxonomic names, including 130,000 accepted species and 14,000 accepted subspecies. This represents a huge effort by more than 400 contributing specialists throughout Europe and is a unique (standard) reference suitable for many users in science, government, industry, nature conservation and education. Hymenoptera is one of the four largest orders of inse…
[The in vitro effect of the addition of ion exchange resins on the bioavailability of electrolytes in artificial enteral feeding formulas].
2008
Objective: To determine in vitro free ion concentration in 3 standard artificial enteral feeding formulas following the addition of ion exchange resins. Method: Three standard types of AEF were chosen: Osmolite HN®, Nutrison Standard®, and Isosource Standard®. The ion exchange resins used were: sodium polystyrene sulfonate and calcium polystyrene sulfonate. In a beaker were mixed 100 mL of AEF with 1.5 g or 3 g of ion exchange resins for 48 hours at 37oC. Subsequently, the samples were precipitated and the supernatant obtained was used for determining the concentrations of calcium, magnesium, sodium, and potassium ions. Results: The addition of sodium polystyrene sulfonate to different type…
Implementation and microbiological stability of dose-banded ganciclovir infusion bags prepared in series by a robotic system.
2018
Objectives The implementation of dose-banding (DB) in centralised, pharmacy-based cytotoxic drug preparation units allows the preparation of standardised doses in series. The aim of this study was to evaluate the feasibility of DB for the prescribing of ganciclovir (GV) infusion solutions and to investigate the microbiological stability of dose-banded, automatically prepared ready-to-administer GV infusion bags by media-fill simulation tests and sterility tests. Methods The frequency of prescription of GV doses was retrospectively analysed before and after implementing the DB scheme. Four dose-ranges or ‘bands’ and the corresponding standard doses (250, 300, 350, 400 mg) were identified. Th…
Two new antarctic species of the genus Schizotricha Allman, 1883 (Cnidaria, Hydrozoa)
1998
Two new antarctic species of the genus Schizotricha Allman have been studied. The material comes from the Scotia Sea (Antarctica) and was collected by the Spanish antarctic expedition `Antartida 8611'. Both species are described and figured and the systematic position is discussed. A general survey of the geographical and bathymetrical distribution of the antarctic and subantarctic species of the genus is given. Finally, a key for the identification of the antarctic and subantarctic species of the genus, together with a comparative table including main features, are presented.
On two new species of Oswaldella Stechow, 1919 (Cnidaria, Hydrozoa) from Bransfield Strait (Antarctica)
1998
Two species of the genus Oswaldella Stechow, 1919 new to science (Oswaldella crassa sp. nov. and O.␣curiosa sp. nov.) were studied. Both species are described and figured; their systematic position amongst the remaining species of the genus is discussed. The material originates from the Bransfield Strait area (Antarctica) and was collected during the United States Antarctic Research Program with R.V. Eltanin. A comparative table listing the main features of the known species of Oswaldella is presented. Finally, a general survey of geographical and bathymetrical distribution of the known species of Oswaldella is given.
Assessment of the bioactivity of creosote-contaminated sediment by liver biotransformation system of rainbow trout.
1999
A sediment site in the Lake Jamsanvesi (municipality of Petajavesi, Finland) contaminated by creosote was investigated to assess the possible ecotoxicological risks it may cause to benthic animals, including ones which may arise due to physical measures in remediating the site. It is suggested that polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are bioavailable to fish and other aquatic animals during exposure to contaminated water, sediment, and food. In order to assess toxicological risks of sediment contents to fish, juvenile rainbow trout (Onchorhynchus mykiss) were intraperitoneally dosed with extracts of the creosote-contaminated sediments and their elutriates. This was compared to pristine …
The adenine nucleotide content of rat liver during infusions of carbohydrates and polyols
1972
Injection of large doses of fructose, sorbitol, or a mixture of glucose, fructose and xylitol in rats causes a drop of liver ATP, total adenine nucleotides and Pi and a rise of AMP, which is in agreement with data from the literature. These changes are considered as a transient disturbance of homeostasis by compounds which are rapidly phosporylated in the liver. This is confirmed by the fact that during continuous infusion of these and other compounds at doses of 1,5 g · kg−1 · h−1 there was no such change. It is concluded that infusions of fructose or of the other carbohydrates tested with rates not exceeding those recommended for parenteral nutrition (0,5 g · kg−1 · h−1) are not likely to…
