Combining system dynamics modelling and management control systems to support strategic learning processes in SMEs: a Dynamic Performance Management …

2015

Traditional management control systems, mainly centred on accounting-based measures, are widely recognized as useful tools to support Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) managers and entrepreneurs in steering business development. However, due to the increasing turbulence and dynamic complexity that characterize today’s competitive arenas, such systems need to be combined with simulation-based methodologies in order to improve entrepreneurial learning processes and, as a result, better detect possible crisis symptoms and weak signals of change—emerging from the business environment—to promptly react. Therefore, the aim of this paper is to show how a combination of traditional management con…

From Strategy to Code: Achieving Strategical Alignment in Software Development Projects Through Conceptual Modelling

2021

In this article we propose S2C, a strategy-to-code methodological approach to integrate organisational, business process, and information system modelling levels to support strategic alignment in software development. Through a model-driven approach and under the Conceptual-Model Programming paradigm, the proposal supports the semi-automatic generation of working software, as well as traceability among the modelling levels. Via a working example, we illustrate how strategic definitions can be traced into specific software components by the integration of three modelling methods: Lite*, for modelling strategic reaction to external influences, Communication Analysis, for business process mode…

The role of standard software packages in mediating management accounting knowledge

2006

PurposeThis paper aims to analyse how cost accounting knowledge is mediated in a large multinational organisation employing a company‐wide enterprise resource planning system and off‐the‐shelf activity based costing software to create a uniform profitability management system within the organisation.Design/methodology/approachThe case analysis is informed by the theoretical notions of dis‐and re‐embedding of expert knowledge, expert systems and standards.FindingsThe results indicate that standardised cost accounting software packages may be useful not only because of their superior data processing properties and technical efficiency, but also because of their usability in overcoming resista…

The importance of management innovation and consultant services on ERP implementation success

2011

Enterprise resource planning (ERP) implementation has been an important activity for improving efficiency. However, an ERP system is a critical investment that can significantly affect future performance of a company. Many ERP projects report an unusually high failure rate. This study empirically investigates the involvement of management consultants in ERP implementation success. The results from our field survey of 134 ERP end-users in Spanish ceramic tile companies show that ERP implementation success significantly depends on the quality of consultant services. The results also indicate the importance of internal management throughout the learning process. Overall, these findings contrib…

MANUFACTURING E-MARKETPLACES: INNOVATIVE TOOLS FOR THE EXTENDED ENTERPRISE

2005

This Chapter introduces the research carried out under the research program titled “Distributed process and production planning in manufacturing enterprise networks” and funded by the Italian Ministry of Education, University and Research (MIUR) under the program PRIN2001. The research program aimed at developing an innovative concept of neutral linear e-marketplace able to support manufacturing enterprises networks in transactional, information sharing and exchange and collaborative relationship. The Chapter discusses the needs of innovative tools for supporting the new paradigm of the “extended enterprise” showing how the e-marketplace concept, when specific added value services are desig…

Creating Business Value from Cloud-Based ERP Systems in Small and Medium-Sized Enterprises

2019

Part 11: Modelling and Managing the Digital Enterprise; International audience; This qualitative study focuses on how small- and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) can realize benefits and create information technology (IT) value by investing in cloud enterprise resource planning (ERP) systems. We interviewed 19 respondents from cloud providers and cloud clients and found that their SMEs experienced both benefits and challenges when implementing cloud ERP systems. The digital value was obtained through work process automatization, fast updates of system functionalities, enhanced security of data storage, and increased access to critical business data from multiple digital units. Challenges in …

Methods of project management used in small and medium enterprises

2019

Abstract The paper presents the most important methods of project management and general management used in small and medium enterprises in the central area of Romania, as well as the degree of their use. Therefore, we have developed a research based on questionnaire in small and medium enterprises from various fields, in order to find how their managers combines these methods and which ones are used more frequently. Unfortunately, our research has found poor or mediocre use of project management methods, as well as most of the general management methods. Training employees of enterprises in project management field, hiring experts in management, or developing post-graduate courses in this …

Method Framework for Developing Enterprise Architecture Security Principles

2019

Organizations need to consider many facets of information security in their daily operations – among others, the rapidly increasing use of IT, emerging technologies and digitalization of organizations’ core resources provoke new threats that can be difficult to anticipate. It has been argued that the security and privacy considerations should be embedded in all the areas of organizational activities instead of only relying technical security mechanisms provided by the underlying systems and software. Enterprise Architecture Management (EAM) offers a holistic approach for managing different dimensions of an organization, and can be conceived as a coherent and consistent set of principles tha…

Exploring Process-Modelling Practice: Towards a Conceptual Model

2008

Despite the importance of process modelling for business process management and related tasks, there are few theories and empirical studies of process-modelling practice available that can serve as the basis for understanding and improving this important practice. To contribute to the development of better theory, this paper proposes a model of process modelling practice, focussing on the relations between process modelling purpose, process modelling process, model artefact, process modelling outcome as well as initial and eventual modelling and process maturity. The proposed model is based on the existing literature and validated in a study of 34 Norwegian process-modelling projects. Resul…
