How to do things with signs. The formulation of directives on signs in public spaces

2021

Abstract This paper analyzes signs and written messages aimed at regulating people's behavior in public spaces. Based on a collection of more than 700 verbal and pictographic signs, the paper focuses on how the formulation of the directives reflect and construct the authors' deontic authority, how they account for the social legitimacy of the directive and how they seek to evoke the addressee's goodwill and cooperativeness. The analysis shows that the author's entitlement to perform the directive may be grounded in references to institutional authority, or that it may be manifested in the linguistic or pictographic expression itself, such as use of imperative mode, exclamation marks, or thr…

The role of moral disengagement and cognitive distortions toward children among sex offenders

2018

This study investigated the individual and social characteristics, moral disengagement strategies and cognitive distortions toward children among 120 sex offenders in Italian jails. A semistructured interview was administered to collect data about family, social and medical histories, utilizing the Moral Disengagement Scale and the Hanson Sex Attitude Questionnaire. Results showed that sex offenders with sexual abuse trauma in their past had higher scores of moral disengagement and cognitive distortion toward children than sex offenders without sexual abuse trauma. In particular, the highest levels of moral disengagement, cognitive distortions related to children as sexual objects and sexua…

Epistemic governance in local policy debates : The case of entitlement to early childhood education and care in Finland

2019

In Finland, children below school age have enjoyed the right to attend subsidised full-time early childhood education and care (ECEC). However, the attendance rate in Finland is low in comparison to other Nordic countries. Furthermore, the entitlement was restricted to 20 h per week in 2016 unless the child’s parents work or study full-time or unless it is believed that the child will benefit from full-time ECEC. The debates concerning restrictions in ECEC entitlement in three municipal councils serve as the data for this study. By using the framework of epistemic governance, we identify three differing constructions of the ECEC’s societal functions in the municipal policy debates. The simi…

Universal Health Coverage for Undocumented Migrants. The Spanish Case

2018

Implementation of the universal right to health, along with the UN’s goal to achieve universal health coverage (UHC), face common challenges to ensuring universal health care entitlement. One of these difficulties is health care restrictions for undocumented migrants. A recent example is the Spanish health care regulation that places universal coverage at risk by restricting access to it by this group. The work herein examines the right to health and UHC’s regulations with the aim of determining if access to health care services for undocumented migrants is indeed recognized and if this recognition could therefore be valid to limit those kinds of measures. The UHC proposal does not sufficie…

Some Remarks on the Relationship between Secession and General International Law in the Light of the ICJ’s Kosovo Advisory Opinion

2012

How is it possible to regard something that is not prohibited, as illegal? What are the resulting consequences of fact and law? This chapter suggests that a reasonable way to reconcile these two assertions is to admit that they refer to two profiles of the phenomenon in question that must be kept separate. Independence is not prohibited, but not all means to reach it are allowed under general international law. To render this concept, the author submits the idea of a normative "due process" seen as a set of rules giving no legal entitlement to statehood nor determining the creation of a State, but forming a normative course through which factual processes should be legally channelled. The c…

Joint planning in conversations with a person with aphasia

2021

Abstract This study explores practices employed by a person with aphasia (PWA) and his wife to organize joint planning sequences and negotiate deontic rights (a participants' entitlement to initiate planning sequences and the entitlement to accept or reject a plan). We analyze two different conversations between a man with aphasia and his wife and their adult daughter. Using Conversation Analysis (CA), we identify practices that further the PWA's participation in the interaction while planning afternoon activities together with his wife. The PWA contributes to the planning talk by initiating and modifying planning sequences. The spouse supports his participation by aligning with his initiat…

Much ado about nothing? The intendant, the gentilshommes and the investigations into nobility in Burgundy (1664-1670)

2008

In 1664 Louis XIV did not spare the Burgundian nobles where furnishing proof of their entitlement to nobility was concerned. His quest for usurpers, which occurred throughout the French kingdom, generated severe misgivings among the gentilshommes, those nobles who had the right to sit in the provincial estates and feared that members of their Chambre would suffer pointless harassment. However, the process was conducted in an unexpectedly lenient manner, demonstrating that royal authority—through its local representative, the intendant Claude Bouchu—could be employed in a conciliatory fashion. The monarchical system, negotiated as much as imposed, should be understood within the framework of…

Social comparisons at work as related to a cooperative social climate and to individual differences in social comparison orientation

2005

This study examined the frequency of social comparisons in a work setting, and the feelings that these comparisons evoked. These processes were related to individual differences in social comparison orientation, and to the perception of a cooperative social climate at work. The participants were 216 physicians from various health centers in the Community of Valencia in Spain. In general, upward comparisons occurred more often, and elicited more positive and less negative affect than downward comparisons. Those high in social comparison orientation reported relatively more upward as well as downward comparisons, more positive affect after downward comparisons, and more negative affect after …
