Revision of coelotine spiders from Nepal (Araneae:Amaurobiidae)

2009

Coelotine spiders from Nepal are studied based on collections from the Himalaya Expeditions of J. Martens carried out in the years 1969, 1970, 1973, 1980, 1983, 1988 and 1995. In total, 38 Nepalese species of the genus Draconarius Ovtchinnikov, 1999 are described, including 35 new species. These are: D. beloniforis, sp. nov. (♂), D. bifarius, sp. nov. (♂), D. brevikarenos, sp. nov. (♀), D. capitellus, sp. nov. (♀), D. communis, sp. nov. (♂♀), D. condocephalus, sp. nov. (♂♀), D. confusus, sp. nov. (♂♀), D. contiguus, sp. nov. (♀), D. cylindratus, sp. nov. (♀), D. dapaensis, sp. nov. (♂), D. distinctus, sp. nov. (♂♀), D. dorsicephalus, sp. nov. (♂♀), D. gorkhaensis, sp. nov. (♂♀), D. gurkha (…

Esterase isoenzymes and insecticide resistance in Frankliniella occidentalis populations from the south-east region of Spain.

2008

BACKGROUND:Frankliniella occidentalis (Pergande) is among the most important crop pests in the south-east region of Spain; its increasing resistance to insecticides constitutes a serious problem, and understanding the mechanisms involved is therefore of great interest. To this end, F. occidentalis populations, collected from the field at different locations in south-east Spain, were studied in terms of total esterase activity and esterase isoenzyme pattern. RESULTS: Individual thrips extracts were analysed by native polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis (PAGE) and stained for esterase activity with the model substrate α-naphthyl acetate. Significant correlations were found between resistance t…

External and internal elimination of supernumerary larvae in the whitefly parasitoid Eretmocerus mundus Mercet (Hymenoptera: Aphelinidae)

2008

Abstract The solitary parasitoid Eretmocerus mundus Mercet (Hymenoptera: Aphelinidae) is one of the key biological control agents of the whitefly Bemisia argentifolii Bellows & Perring, also known as B. tabaci (Gennadius) B-biotype (Homoptera: Aleyrodidae). We present new information on its biology, and particularly about larval elimination during the first instar in cases of superparasitism. For the first time, physical elimination of supernumerary larvae was observed, both outside and inside the host. These findings are documented with confocal microscopy images and video recordings. We observed more than 350 B. argentifolii nymphs, parasitized with one, two or more than two larvae. Physi…

Clock genes and photoperiodism in the aphid Acyrthosiphon pisum

2017

Aphids have a strong seasonal response, namely the development of a sexual morphs triggered by the shortening of photoperiod in autumn that produce an overwintering egg in which an embryonic diapause takes place. From this egg, an asexual parthenogenetic female emerges giving way to the asexual phase of the aphid life cycle in which several asexual generations occur. Based on the response to short photoperiods, two strains of aphids can be found: the holocyclic develop the seasonal response under short photoperiods, while the anholocyclic do not. The sequencing of the genome of the pea aphid Acyrthosiphon pisum places this species as an excellent model to investigate the the involvement of …

40 lat minęło. Rubinowy jubileusz Sekcji Dipterologicznej Polskiego Towarzystwa Entomologicznego

2023

40 years have passed. Ruby jubilee of the Dipterological Section of the Polish Entomological Society. The illustrated notes on the Dipterological Section of the Polish Entomological Society are presented. The idea of establishing the Section emerged in 1980 in Cracow, formally implemented a year later. Each year members meet at a scientific symposium in various places of Poland. The group releases international journal Dipteron, and in 2013 proclaimed World Dipteran Day.

Fecundity determines the outcome of founding queen associations in ants

2021

AbstractAnimal cooperation evolved because of its benefits to the cooperators. Pleometrosis in ants - the cooperation of queens to found a colony - benefits colony growth, but also incurs costs for some of the cooperators because only one queen usually survives the association. While several traits are associated with queen survival, they tend to be confounded and it is unclear which factor specifically determines the outcome of pleometrosis. In this study, we used the ant Lasius niger to monitor offspring production in colonies founded by one or two queens. Then, we experimentally paired queens that differed in fecundity but not in size, and vice versa, to disentangle the effect of these f…

Data from: Symbiotic polydnavirus and venom reveal parasitoid to its hyperparasitoids

2018

Symbiotic relationships may provide organisms with key innovations that aid in the establishment of new niches. For example, during oviposition, some species of parasitoid wasps, whose larvae develop inside the bodies of other insects, inject polydnaviruses into their hosts. These symbiotic viruses disrupt host immune responses, allowing the parasitoid’s progeny to survive. Here, we show that symbiotic polydnaviruses also have a downside to the parasitoid’s progeny by initiating a multi-trophic chain of interactions that reveals the parasitoid larvae to their enemies. These enemies are hyperparasitoids that use the parasitoid progeny as host for their own offspring. We found that the virus …
