Reliability of Short-Term Heart Rate Variability Indexes Assessed through Photoplethysmography

2018

The gold standard method to monitor heart rate variability (HRV) comprises measuring the time series of interbeat interval durations from electrocardiographic (ECG) recordings. However, due to the widespread use, simplicity and usability of photoplethysmographic (PPG) techniques, monitoring pulse rate variability (PRV) from pulse wave recordings has become a viable alternative to standard HRV analysis. The present study investigates the accuracy of PRV, measured as a surrogate of HRV, for the quantification of descriptive indexes computed in the time domain (mean, variance), frequency domain (low-to-high frequency power ratio LF/HF, HF band central frequency) and information domain (entropy…

Cardiovascular and respiratory variability during orthostatic and mental stress: A comparison of entropy estimators

2017

The aim of this study is to characterize cardiovascular and respiratory signals during orthostatic and mental stress as reflected in indices of entropy and complexity, providing a comparison between the performance of different estimators. To this end, the heart rate variability, systolic blood pressure, diastolic blood pressure and respiration time series were extracted from the recordings of 61 healthy volunteers undergoing a protocol consisting of supine rest, head-up tilt test and mental arithmetic task. The analysis was performed in the information domain using measures of entropy and conditional entropy, estimated through model-based (linear) and model-free (binning, nearest neighbor)…

Disentangling cardiovascular control mechanisms during head-down tilt via joint transfer entropy and self-entropy decompositions

2015

A full decomposition of the predictive entropy (PE) of the spontaneous variations of the heart period (HP) given systolic arterial pressure (SAP) and respiration (R) is proposed. The PE of HP is decomposed into the joint transfer entropy (JTE) from SAP and R to HP and self-entropy (SE) of HP. The SE is the sum of three terms quantifying the synergistic/redundant contributions of HP and SAP, when taken individually and jointly, to SE and one term conditioned on HP and SAP denoted as the conditional SE (CSE) of HP given SAP and R. The JTE from SAP and R to HP is the sum of two terms attributable to SAP or R plus an extra term describing the redundant/synergistic contribution to the JTE. All q…

Detecting self-similarity in surface microstructures

2000

The relative configurational entropy per cell as a function of length scale is a sensitive detector of spatial self-similarity. For Sierpinski carpets the equally separated peaks of the above function appear at the length scales that depend on the kind of the carpet. These peaks point to the presence of self-similarity even for randomly perturbed initial fractal sets. This is also demonstrated for the model population of particles diffusing over the surface considered by Van Siclen, Phys. Rev. E 56 (1997) 5211. These results allow the subtle self-similarity traces to be explored.

Thermal potential of ion-exchange membranes and its application to thermoelectric power generation

2016

The low efficiency and high price of thermoelectric semiconductors has generated interest in unconventional forms of thermoelectric materials. In this article, ionic thermoelectricity has been studied with commercial ion-exchange membranes for different aqueous 1:1 electrolytes. The theory of thermal membrane potential has been derived taking into account the ionic heats of transport, the non-isothermal Donnan potentials, the temperature polarization, and the thermally-induced concentration polarization of the electrolyte. Also the generated thermoelectric power has been experimentally studied. The experiments show good agreement with the theory, and suggest ways for systematic improvement …

Measuring spectrally-resolved information transfer for sender- and receiver-specific frequencies

2020

AbstractInformation transfer, measured by transfer entropy, is a key component of distributed computation. It is therefore important to understand the pattern of information transfer in order to unravel the distributed computational algorithms of a system. Since in many natural systems distributed computation is thought to rely on rhythmic processes a frequency resolved measure of information transfer is highly desirable. Here, we present a novel algorithm, and its efficient implementation, to identify separately frequencies sending and receiving information in a network. Our approach relies on the invertible maximum overlap discrete wavelet transform (MODWT) for the creation of surrogate d…

A thermodynamic approach to study hydrogen-bonding interactions in solvent/solvent/polymer ternary systems

2007

Abstract A thermodynamic approach based on both the classical Flory–Huggins (FH) formalism and the association equilibria (AE) theory has been developed to study the solubility properties of a system formed by a proton-donor solvent (A), a proton-acceptor solvent (B) and a proton-acceptor polymer (C). The miscibility of this ternary system is attained by competitive specific interactions via hydrogen-bonding established between the hydroxyl and carbonyl interacting groups of either solvent–solvent (AB) or solvent–polymer (AC) system components. The binary AB and AC specific interactions and their dependence with the system composition as well as with the extent of the association equilibriu…

Evaluation of thermodynamic parameters for blends of polyethersulfone and poly(methyl methacrylate) or polystyrene in dimethylformamide

1998

Liquid-liquid phase separation phenomena have been investigated for a ternary system containing two polymers and a solvent. Namely, dimethylformamide (DMF)/polyethersulfone (PES)/poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) and DMF/PES/Polystyrene (PS). The composition of the three components in the two phases in equilibrium has been determined by size exclusion chromatographic (s.e.c.) analysis. The lattice-based mean-field theory, first developed by Flory and Huggins, has been modified to adequately describe these systems. In this respect, we have assumed that the parameters depend on the polymer concentration, and we have included a ternary parameter. The phase equilibrium compositions have been use…
