The value of perfect and imperfect information in lake monitoring and management.
2020
Highlights • Knowledge on the value of monitoring can assist decision-making in lake management. • We calculate value of perfect information theoretically. • We estimate value of imperfect information with Monte Carlo type of approach. • Generally, monitoring is profitable to invest in if VOI exceeds the cost. • Additional monitoring is profitable even if the lake is in good condition a priori. Uncertainty in the information obtained through monitoring complicates decision making about aquatic ecosystems management actions. We suggest the value of information (VOI) to assess the profitability of paying for additional monitoring information, when taking into account the costs and benefits of…
Fire in Protected Areas - the Effect of Protection and Importance of Fire Management
2012
Fires are important but socially and economically unwanted disturbances of the ecosystems. They cannot be considered as a problem, they are global phenomena. Protected areas are created to protect biodiversity, and strict protection is often applied, forgetting that fire had shaped that that we aim to protect. This harsh protection is producing important changes in the protected habitats and is increasing their vulnerability to destructive wildfires. Thus, it is of major interest to incorporate fire management in the protected areas plan, including the (re)use of prescribed fire and traditional burning in order to reintroduce fire regimens, fundamental to the landscape sustainability. This …
Exploring Environmental Management Control in Proactive Firms
2022
This chapter discusses the integration of environmental issues into the sphere of management control – renamed environmental management control (EMC) in France or eco-control in North America. We aim to contribute to reflections on the topic and to propose a conceptual framework for EMC by answering the following three research questions: How can we define EMC? How is EMC used in companies? Do management controllers have a part to play in this new managerial process?
SUSTENTABILIDADE AMBIENTAL: UM ESTUDO NA AUTORIDADE PORTUÁRIA DE VALENCIA, ESPANHA.
2012
Nature and origin of fault-controlled fluid seepage across the Maltese Islands
2018
The Maltese Islands are intersected by two major fault systems associated with two diverse rifting episodes affect the islands. The first and most widespread system is Early Miocene to mid-Pliocene in age, and consists of faults that are orientated ENE-WSW. The most distinct of these faults is the Great Fault (known also as the Victoria Lines Fault). The younger system of faults (Late Miocene-Early Pliocene) is still active and consists of faults striking NW to SE that often cross-cut the first generation of faults. The most extensive of these faults is the Maghlaq Fault, located along the southern coastline of the Maltese Islands.
Zarządzanie środowiskowe w rolnictwie w gospodarce sieciowej
2012
The Influence of Strategic and Organizational Factors as Concern the Relationship between Environmental Management Control and Organizational Learnin…
2020
This article examines the relationship between Environmental Management Control (EMC) and Organizational Learning (OL) by extending the theoretical model of Simons (1995) in a contingent perspective. Through strategic and organizational factors, this enriched model expounds the links between the Simons’s (1995) levers of control (diagnostic and interactive controls) and the Argyris and Schön’s (1978) levels of learning (simple loop learning and double loop learning). Based on the “revelatory case” of a missionary organization, eco-SME, this study highlights the influence of three contingency factors : strong core values, proactive strategy and activity life cycle in the four configurations …

Worldwide Diffusion of ISO 14001 Standard
2008
We conduct an empirical examination of national conditions that promote the diffusion of the ISO 14001 standard. Our estimates confirm earlier studies on several determinants. While environmental considerations are important in the diffusion of the ISO 14001 standard, we show that other factors play a significant role as well, such as the prior diffusion of ISO 9000 and the country’s education level. Our main contribution is to provide empirical evidence for the hypothesis that the participation of a country or an economic sector in the standard-setting process is a major driver of its future adoption of the standard.
