Assessing eco-efficiency: A metafrontier directional distance function approach using life cycle analysis

Sustainability analysis requires a joint assessment of environmental, social and economic aspects of production processes. Here we propose the use of Life Cycle Analysis (LCA), a metafrontier (MF) directional distance function (DDF) approach, and Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA), to assess technological and managerial differences in eco-efficiency between production systems. We use LCA to compute six environmental and health impacts associated with the production processes of nearly 200 Spanish citrus farms belonging to organic and conventional farming systems. Fast and safe decomposition of corpses requires high-quality functional soils, and land use which competes with both agriculture and buildings. Transport planning as suggested in John Claudius Loudon’s 1829 plan for London

ABSTRACTWe consider Scottish landscape gardener J.C. Loudon’s already well-documented 1829 plan for a system of successive green belts around London. Our perspective will be that of transport planning, given his recommendations on street layout and public transport provision. Our contention is that Loudon’s design for the Metropolis would have been theoretically inoperative if it had not been for its transport network. Beside other forward-thinking aspects already demonstrated by researchers, Loudon’s plan is remarkable for setting out a design for an integrated Metropolis based on road planning and the then barely nascent technology of railways.

Protected crops in the Mediterranean area has reached advanced production systems, but they should solve environmental, energy and money problems.
