Methods for the Identification of Tainting Terpenoids and other Compounds from Algae

Off-flavour compounds produced by algae in freshwater ecosystems were studied for their structure using integrated sensory and spectroscopic methods: mass spectrometry (MS), nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) and Fourier transform infrared (FTIR). Both solvent extraction and thermal desorption were used to isolate and to introduce the compounds into gas chromatography/mass spectrometry (GC/MS) and gas chromatography/Fourier transform infrared (GC/FTIR) systems. Ten ng of a terpenoid compound gave a readable IR spectrum. For 1H NMR studies the compounds were collected directly into NMR solvent by preparative gas chromatography. AbstractRemoval of potentially harmful phosphorus compounds from wastewater by adsorption onto biosorbents is a cost-effective alternative to the conventional treatment methods. Raw peat and peat modified with iron(III) hydroxy ions were used in this study to remove phosphate ions from synthetic solution and household wastewater. Interaction of iron(III) ions with carboxylic groups of peat occurred during peat modification, which was confirmed by the FTIR technique. Alcohol consumption has been increasing in the last years and it has become a sociological problem due its derived health and safety problems. Ethyl sulfate is a secondary metabolite of the alcohol degradation that is excreted through the urine (0.010-0.016%) after alcohol ingestion and it is quite stable in water. In this study, a new methodology to determine ethyl sulfate by ion-pair liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS) was developed. Different ion-pairs and additives were tested directly in the sample extracts or in the mobile phase. The best ion-pair was set up adding 0.5M of tributylamine and 0.1% of formic acid to the sample. Evaluation of carbamazepine uptake and metabolization by Typha spp., a plant with potential use in phytotreatment

Abstract Phytoremediation technologies such as constructed wetlands have shown higher efficiencies in removal of pharmaceuticals from wastewaters than conventional wastewater treatment processes, and plants seem to have an important role in the removal of some of those compounds. In this context, a study was conducted to assess tolerance, uptake, and metabolism of the epilepsy drug, carbamazepine, by the macrophyte Typha spp. This evaluation was conducted in hydroponic solutions with 0.5–2.0 mg/L of this pharmaceutical for a maximum period of 21 days. Abstract In this paper, the outflow process of inclined non-rectangular weirs is studied applying the dimensional analysis and the incomplete self-similarity theory. Modeling accident risk at the road level through zero-inflated negative binomial models: A case study of multiple road networks

Abstract This paper presents a case study carried out in multiple cities of the Valencian Community (Spain) to determine the effect of sociodemographic and road characteristics on traffic accident risk. The analyzes are performed at the road segment level, considering the linear network representing the road structure of each city as a spatial lattice. The number of accidents observed in each road segment from 2010 to 2019 is taken as the response variable, and a zero-inflated modeling approach is considered.
