Urinary ethyl glucuronide (uEtG) as a marker for alcohol consumption in liver transplant candidates: a real-world cohort

 In order to reduce alcohol relapse after liver transplantation (LT), the German national guidelines for waiting-list maintenance and organ allocation demand a minimum 6-month period of alcohol abstinence pre-LT, confirmed by measuring urinary ethyl glucuronide (uEtG). Between January 2015 and June 2016, uEtG was measured at least once in 339 cirrhotic patients with an indication for LT at the University Medical Center Mainz. uEtG was measured with an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) screening test (cutoff value: 500 µg/L). Despite advances in cardiac arrest treatment, high mortality and morbidity rates after successful cardiopulmonary resuscitation are still a major clinical relevant problem. The post cardiac arrest syndrome subsumes myocardial dysfunction, impaired microcirculation, systemic inflammatory response, and neurological impairment. Cytomegalovirus infection with interleukin-6 response predicts cardiac mortality in patients with coronary artery disease.

Background —Prospective data relating previous exposure to cytomegalovirus (CMV) to the risk of cardiac mortality are controversial. We investigated the effect of previous exposure to CMV infection on the risk of future cardiac disease–related death in relation to an underlying inflammatory response. Methods and Results —Coronary angiography was performed in 1134 subjects, and 989 patients with documented coronary artery disease were studied prospectively. Immunologic and absorptive tests in celiac disease: can they replace intestinal biopsies?

The sensitivity and specificity of several immunologic and absorption tests were determined in infants with celiac disease (31 male, 39 female; median age, 2.6 years) in different phases of the disease and in a group of control subjects with chronic diarrhea of different etiologies (32 male, 28 female; median age, 1.2 years). Intestinal biopsy was performed both in the patients and in the controls as a 'gold standard' for the diagnosis. Echinostoma caproni: kinetics of IgM, IgA and IgG subclasses in the serum and intestine of experimentally infected rats and mice.

The kinetics of specific immunoglobulin M, A and IgG subclasses against Echinostoma caproni (Trematoda: Echinostomatidae) were analyzed in serum and intestinal fluid of two host species (Wistar rats and ICR mice) in which the course of the infection markedly differs. In rats, the worms were rapidly expelled, whereas E. caproni evokes in mice long-lasting infection. The pattern of antibody responses in both serum and intestinal samples was different in each host species. Serum responses in mice were characterized by significant increases of IgM, IgA, total IgG, IgG1 and IgG3, but not IgG2a.
