Reconstructing the Gothic in games and gaming : Gothic monsters and ideology in the story world and player experiences of Fallout 3
2018
This dissertation research investigates the deployment of Gothic elements in digital games and player experiences of Gothic monsters. The Gothic is a rich and popular resource for games that, through representations of monstrosities and injustice, aims to induce in players a pleasurable feeling of discomfort, yet also reflects contemporary anxieties. The dissertation comprises three case studies of which the first two are close readings of the action role-playing game Fallout 3 and the third discourse analysis of transcribed player narration from Let’s Play (LP) gameplay videos. More specifically, the case studies discuss the dual role of Gothic monstrosities as a cause and consequence of t…
Designing P-Chirogenic 1,2-Diphosphinobenzenes at Both P-Centers Using P(III)-Phosphinites
2016
International audience; A new enantiodivergent synthesis of P-chirogenic 1,2-diphosphinobenzenes (DP*B) bearing the chirality on one or both phosphorus centers is reported using aryne chemistry. The principle is based on successive reactions of 1,2-dibromobenzene with sec-phosphide boranes, then DABCO to remove the borane, and finally with chlorophosphines or P(III)-chirogenic phosphinites. The efficiency of this synthesis was demonstrated by the stereoselective preparation of (S,S)-1,2-bis(o-anisylphenylphosphino)benzene. A comparison of DIPAMP and homochiral DP*B ligands in asymmetric Rh- or Pd-catalyzed reactions was reported.
Folate-targeted gold nanorods for effective combined photothermal-chemotherapy of osteosarcoma
2016
Osteosarcoma (OS) is the most common primary malignant neoplasm of bone. The annual incidence of osteosarcoma is 8-11 per million in the age group of 15-19 years. Despite its rarity, it has been reported to be the second leading cause of cancer-related deaths in children and young adults. In particular with regard to OS therapy, a variety of nanostructures have been exploited in the areas of OS imaging. Among them, Gold nanorods (AuNRs) have unique optical and chemical-physical properties that make them appealing for biomedical applications such as photothermal therapy, drug delivery and imaging of solid tumors. The noble metal core is biologically inert, contributing to low toxicity and go…
NIR LASER-RESPONSIVE FOLATE-TARGETED GOLD NANORODS AS EFFICIENT THERANOSTIC TOOL FOR OSTEOSARCOMA TREATMENT
2017
Folate-targeted gold nanorods (GNRs) are here proposed as selective theranostic agents for osteosarcoma treatment. Taking advantage of the attractive physiochemical and optical properties of GNRs they can be proposed as effective and selective platform to obtain a targeted intracellular drug release, photothermal therapy and cancer imaging, which may improve therapeutic outcomes of osteosarcoma. An amphiphilic polysaccharide graft-copolymer, named INU-LA-PEG-FA, and a folic acid functionalized α,β-poly(N-2-hydroxyethyl)-D,L-aspartamide (PHEA-FA), have been synthesized to act as coating agents for GNRs. The obtained polymer-coated GNRs were characterized in terms of size, shape, zeta potenti…
VELENI ED ALCHIMIE NEI MATERIALI DELL’EDILIZIA PRE INDUSTRIALE
2019
Since at least two decades, a renewed sensitivity to biocompatibility and the consequent diffusion of eco-certified building products have led to the attention of designers and operators on the issue of the healthness of construction materials. Although the application of strict protocols guarantees for new constructions very high levels of healthiness for both construction workers and users who come into direct contact with building materials and components, the issue for the characterization of potentially hazardous materials arises in many case for historical buildings. In addition to the well-known asbestos problem, there are new worrying signs deriving from the ascertainment in the inc…
A novel approach to β-decay: PANDORA, a new experimental setup for future in-plasma measurements
2022
International audience; Theoretical predictions as well as experiments performed at storage rings have shown that the lifetimes of β-radionuclides can change significantly as a function of the ionization state. In this paper we describe an innovative approach, based on the use of a compact plasma trap to emulate selected stellar-like conditions. It has been proposed within the PANDORA project (Plasmas for Astrophysics, Nuclear Decay Observation and Radiation for Archaeometry) with the aim to measure, for the first time in plasma, nuclear β-decay rates of radionuclides involved in nuclear-astrophysics processes. To achieve this task, a compact magnetic plasma trap has been designed…

Postmortem Electrical Conductivity Changes of Dicentrarchus labrax Skeletal Muscle: Root Mean Square (RMS) Parameter in Estimating Time since Death
2022
Electric impedance spectroscopy techniques have been widely employed to study basic biological processes, and recently explored to estimate postmortem interval (PMI). However, the most-relevant parameter to approximate PMI has not been recognized so far. This study investigated electrical conductivity changes in muscle of 18 sea bass specimens, maintained at different room temperatures (15.0 °C; 20.0 °C; 25.0 °C), during a 24 h postmortem period using an oscilloscope coupled with a signal generator, as innovative technology. The root mean square (RMS) was selected among all measured parameters, and recorded every 15 min for 24 h after death. The RMS(t) time series for each anima…
Regional Disparities and Spatial Dependence of Bankruptcy in Spain
2021
Firm survival, bankruptcy, and turnaround are of great interest nowadays. Bankruptcy is the ultimate resource for a company to survive when it is affected by a severe decline. Thus, determinants of firm turnaround and survival in the context of bankruptcy are of interest to researchers, managers, and policy-makers. Prior turnaround literature has broadly studied firm-specific factors for turnaround success. However, location-specific factors remain relatively unstudied despite their increasing relevance. Thus, this paper aims to evaluate the existence of spatial dependence on the outcome of the bankruptcy procedure. Economic geography and business literature suggest that location matters an…
Vfiimeinen unkarilainen romantikko
2013
