The Effect of the Covid-19 Pandemic on the Epidemiology of Ankle Joint Injuries in Adults and Children
2022
Materiał i metody. W badaniu porównano dane epidemiologiczne dotyczące urazów stawu skokowego u dorosłych i dzieci, zebrane w okresie pandemii COVID-19 (2020) i odpowiadającego jej okresu przed pandemią (2019).
2021
This dataset is part of the “Geographic characteristics, outdoor mobility and physical activity of older people” (GEOage) project, in which freely available geographic information characterizing the environment is linked to participant data of the “Life-space mobility in old age” (LISPE) cohort comprising 75–90-years-old community-dwelling people living in Jyväskylä and Muurame in Central Finland (n=848). The GEOage dataset contains variables of environmental characteristics of participants' environment within 500 or 1000 m from home. The dataset comprises variables related to characteristics of nature (hilliness, nature and green areas, waterside areas) and built environment (land use, nei…
Employment and earnings trajectories before and after sickness absence due to major depressive disorder: a nationwide case-control study.
2020
ObjectivesTo examine employment and earnings trajectories before and after the first sickness absence period due to major depressive disorder (MDD).MethodsAll individuals (n=158 813) in Finland who had a first sickness absence period (lasting longer than 9 days) due to MDD between 2005 and 2015 were matched with one randomly selected individual of the same age and gender with no history of MDD. Employment status and earnings were measured using register-based data annually from 2005 to 2015. Generalised estimating equations were used to examine the trajectories of employment and earnings before and after MDD diagnosis in men and women separately.ResultsSickness absence due to MDD was associ…
The impact of coffee on health
2013
Abstract Objective Coffee is a beverage used worldwide. It includes a wide array of components that can have potential implication on health. We have reviewed publications on the impact of coffee on a series of health outcomes. Methods Articles published between January 1990 and December 2012 were selected after crossing coffee or caffeine with a list of keywords representative of the most relevant health areas potentially affected by coffee intake. Results Caffeine, chlorogenic acids and diterpenes are important components of coffee. Tolerance often acts as a modulator of the biological actions of coffee. There is a significant impact of coffee on the cardiovascular system, and on the meta…
Comorbid Fluency Difficulties in Reading and Math: Longitudinal Stability Across Early Grades
2018
We examined the prevalence of comorbidity of dysfluent reading and math skills longitudinally in a representative sample ( N = 1,928) and the stability of comorbid and single difficulties from first to fourth grades. The findings indicated that half the children who showed very low performance in one skill also evidenced low or very low performance in the other. Comorbid difficulties had somewhat higher prevalence in third and fourth graders than in first and second graders. The stability of comorbid difficulties was found to be established from Grade 2 onward, but the stability of single difficulties increased steadily across grades. Overall, the findings emphasize the relatively strong s…
Data from: Rearing background and exposure environment together explain higher survival of aquaculture fish during a bacterial outbreak
2019
1. Parasitic diseases represent one of the greatest challenges for aquaculture worldwide and there is an increasing emphasis on ecological solutions to prevent infections. One proposed solution is enriched rearing, where traditional stimulus-poor rearing tanks are equipped with different types of structures to increase habitat complexity. Such spatial enrichment is known to increase survival of fish during parasite epidemics, but the underlying mechanisms are still unclear. 2. We studied whether enriched rearing affected infection of an important fish pathogen Flavobacterium columnare in young Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar) and sea-migrating brown trout (Salmo trutta). First, we used natural…
In utero exposure to mixtures of xenoestrogens and child neuropsychological development.
2014
BACKGROUND: To date, no epidemiological studies have explored the impact and persistence of in utero exposure to mixtures of xenoestrogens on the developing brain. We aimed to assess whether the cumulative effect of xenoestrogens in the placenta is associated with altered infant neuropsychological functioning at two and at four years of age, and if associations differ among boys and girls. METHODS: Cumulative prenatal exposure to xenoestrogens was quantified in the placenta using the biomarker Total Effective Xenoestrogen Burden (TEXB-alpha) in 489 participants from the INMA (Childhood and the Environment) Project. TEXB-alpha was split in tertiles to test its association with the mental and…
Towards data-driven medical imaging using natural language processing in patients with suspected urolithiasis.
2020
Abstract Objective The majority of radiological reports are still written as free text and lack structure. Further evaluation of free-text reports is difficult to achieve without a great deal of manual effort, and is not possible in everyday clinical practice. This study aims to automatically capture clinical information and positive hit rates from narrative radiological reports of suspected urolithiasis using natural language processing (NLP). Methods Narrative reports of low dose computed tomography (CT) of the retroperitoneum from April 2016 to July 2018 (n = 1714) were analyzed using NLP. These free-text reports were automatically structured based on RadLex concepts. Manual feedback was…
Cardiovascular risk in psoriatic arthritis, a narrative review
2020
Abstract Introduction Psoriatic arthritis (PsA) is a chronic inflammatory rheumatism characterized for a long time by a high degree of cardiovascular risk. Chronic inflammation is one of the mechanisms that explain this cardiovascular excess of risk through direct and indirect pathways. In recent years, epidemiological data have changed somewhat since the increasing use of bio-drugs that are effective in reducing this inflammation. The purpose of this review is to assess the current state of cardiovascular morbidity and mortality in PsA and thus to assess the cardiovascular risk in case of PsA. Method We conducted a literature review using Pubmed and Medline databases with the following key…
0134 : Atrial fibrillation is associated with a marker of endothelial function and oxidative stress in patients with acute myocardial infarction
2016
Background Atrial fibrillation (AF), whether silent or symptomatic, is a frequent and severe complication of acute myocardial infarction (AMI). Asymmetric dimethylarginine (ADMA), an endogenous eNOS inhibitor, is a risk factor for endothelial dysfunction. We addressed the relationship between ADMA plasma levels and AF occurrence in AMI. Methods 273 patients hospitalized for AMI were included. Continuous electrocardiographic monitoring (CEM) e48 hours was recorded and ADMA was measured by High Performance Liquid Chromatography on admission blood sample. Results The incidence of silent and symptomatic AF was 39(14%) and 29 (11%), respectively. AF patients were markedly older than patients wit…
