Constructing social Europe through European cultural heritage

2021

The political and economic crises of the recent decades as well as the new changes brought on by globalization and digitalization have contributed to exacerbate social inequalities and injustice and revealed different social realities in Europe. The EU increasingly deals with social issues in its cultural and heritage policy. In this article, we explore the construction of this social dimension and advance the concept of 'social Europe' by exploring its cultural aspect based on our analysis of a recent EU heritage action, the European Heritage Label. In this action, the narrations of the European past and the attempts to foster common cultural heritage in Europe function as building blocks …

Climbing for equality: overcoming social inequality through sport : a narrative inquiry into the sport lives of five visually disabled climbers in Me…

2016

This master thesis is a qualitative narrative inquiry that illustrates and explores the stories of five visually disabled participants who took up the practice of rock climbing and mountaineering as a means to overcome social inequality. The researcher’s role within the study was that of active participation by being the coach and mountain guide for the participants over a period of five years. This narrative analysis reconstructs the stories of the participants in a coherent thematic analysis from a Marxist historical perspective, explaining how inequality towards the participants was created, by using the concept of Cultural Hegemony from Antonio Gramsci. The mentioned methodology was cho…

The ALHAMBRA survey: evolution of galaxy clustering since z∼1

2014

We study the clustering of galaxies as function of luminosity and redshift in the range $0.35 < z < 1.25$ using data from the Advanced Large Homogeneous Area Medium Band Redshift Astronomical (ALHAMBRA) survey. The ALHAMBRA data used in this work cover $2.38 \mathrm{deg}^2$ in 7 independent fields, after applying a detailed angular selection mask, with accurate photometric redshifts, $_z \lesssim 0.014 (1+z)$, down to $I_{\rm AB} < 24$. Given the depth of the survey, we select samples in $B$-band luminosity down to $L^{\rm th} \simeq 0.16 L^{*}$ at $z = 0.9$. We measure the real-space clustering using the projected correlation function, accounting for photometric redshifts uncert…

Enabling and constraining family: young women building their educational paths in Tanzania

2015

For an increasing number of African girls and women, upgrading the level of education has become a strategy for life improvement. This paper analyses the role that family plays in enabling women's education and contributes to understanding on the interconnectivity of education, work and family in women's lives in collective societies. The analysis focuses on how young Tanzanian women perceive the role of family and education in their ‘youth task’, of becoming adult. The analysis is based on interviews with seven young Tanzanian women enrolled in non-formal secondary education and nine professional women enrolled in higher education. The results show that the women were determined to pursue …

As Capable as Other Students: Tanzanian Women with Disabilities in Higher Education

2015

Globally, persons with disabilities are underrepresented in higher education. In sub-Saharan Africa, where opportunities for higher education are especially limited, women are unlikely to continue their education. This research investigates women in Tanzanian higher education with the double marginalisation of being a woman and having disabilities. The women were interviewed on what factors enabled access and participation for their educational success. A thematic analysis of qualitative data was applied. All of the women interviewed were motivated to complete their degrees. Key enabling factors were encouragement from their families and previous teachers, full participation in student life…

Bounds for Bessel functions

1989

We establish lower and upper bounds for the Bessel functionJ v (x) and the modified Bessel functionI v(x) of the first kind. Our chief tool is the differential equation satisfied by these functions.

Solvability of the divergence equation implies John via Poincaré inequality

2014

Abstract Let Ω ⊂ R 2 be a bounded simply connected domain. We show that, for a fixed (every) p ∈ ( 1 , ∞ ) , the divergence equation div v = f is solvable in W 0 1 , p ( Ω ) 2 for every f ∈ L 0 p ( Ω ) , if and only if Ω is a John domain, if and only if the weighted Poincare inequality ∫ Ω | u ( x ) − u Ω | q d x ≤ C ∫ Ω | ∇ u ( x ) | q  dist  ( x , ∂ Ω ) q d x holds for some (every) q ∈ [ 1 , ∞ ) . This gives a positive answer to a question raised by Russ (2013) in the case of bounded simply connected domains. In higher dimensions similar results are proved under some additional assumptions on the domain in question.

Mappings of finite distortion: Reverse inequalities for the Jacobian

2007

Let f be a nonconstant mapping of finite distortion. We establish integrability results on 1/Jf by studying weights that satisfy a weak reverse Holder inequality where the associated constant can depend on the ball in question. Here Jf is the Jacobian determinant of f.

A posteriori error estimates for time-dependent reaction-diffusion problems based on the Payne-Weinberger inequality

2015

We consider evolutionary reaction-diffusion problem with mixed Dirichlet--Robin boundary conditions. For this class of problems, we derive two-sided estimates of the distance between any function in the admissible energy space and exact solution of the problem. The estimates (majorants and minorants) are explicitly computable and do not contain unknown functions or constants. Moreover, it is proved that the estimates are equivalent to the energy norm of the deviation from the exact solution.
