Regional inequality and economic development in Spain, 1860–2010

Abstract Fifty years ago Jeffrey G. Williamson suggested that during the process of economic development regional income differences trace out an inverted U-shaped pattern. Since then several studies have tested this hypothesis. Yet, most of these only explore particular stages of development. This study, however, investigates the long-term evolution of regional income inequality. Using a novel dataset spanning 150 years, we describe per-capita GDP disparities across Spanish provinces (NUTS3) from 1860 to 2010. A space X is said to be cellular-Lindelof if for every cellular family $$\mathcal {U}$$ there is a Lindelof subspace L of X which meets every element of $$\mathcal {U}$$ . Cellular-Lindelof spaces generalize both Lindelof spaces and spaces with the countable chain condition. Solving questions of Xuan and Song, we prove that every cellular-Lindelof monotonically normal space is Lindelof and that every cellular-Lindelof space with a regular $$G_\delta $$ -diagonal has cardinality at most $$2^\mathfrak {c}$$ . Musical expertise is visible both in the morphology and functionality of the brain. Recent research indicates that functional integration between multi-sensory, somato-motor, default-mode (DMN), and salience (SN) networks of the brain differentiates musicians from non-musicians during resting state. Here, we aimed at determining whether brain networks differentially exchange information in musicians as opposed to non-musicians during naturalistic music listening. Ex-ante and ex-post measurement of equality of opportunity in health: a normative decomposition.

This paper proposes and discusses two different approaches to the definition of inequality in health: the ex-ante and the ex-post approach. It proposes strategies for measuring inequality of opportunity in health based on the path-independent Atkinson equality index. The proposed methodology is illustrated using data from the British Household Panel Survey; the results suggest that in the period 2000–2005, at least one-third of the observed health equalities in the UK were equalities of opportunity.
