Fractional Hardy-Sobolev type inequalities for half spaces and John domains
2018
As our main result we prove a variant of the fractional Hardy-Sobolev-Maz'ya inequality for half spaces. This result contains a complete answer to a recent open question by Musina and Nazarov. In the proof we apply a new version of the fractional Hardy-Sobolev inequality that we establish also for more general unbounded John domains than half spaces.
New results concerning Chebyshev–Grüss-type inequalities via discrete oscillations
2014
The classical form of Gruss' inequality was first published by G. Gruss and gives an estimate of the difference between the integral of the product and the product of the integrals of two functions. In the subsequent years, many variants of this inequality appeared in the literature. The aim of this paper is to consider some new bivariate Chebyshev-Gruss-type inequalities via discrete oscillations and to apply them to different tensor products of linear (not necessarily) positive, well-known operators. We also compare the new inequalities with some older results. In the end we give a Chebyshev-Gruss-type inequality with discrete oscillations for more than two functions.
Dimension gap under Sobolev mappings
2015
Abstract We prove an essentially sharp estimate in terms of generalized Hausdorff measures for the images of boundaries of Holder domains under continuous Sobolev mappings, satisfying suitable Orlicz–Sobolev conditions. This estimate marks a dimension gap, which was first observed in [2] for conformal mappings.
Afghanistan and the language of equality : a social contract in the making on a world-system fault
2013
The international intervention in Afghanistan started more than ten years ago. It built on new institutions according to the democratic model, complete with concepts generalized in the Western world since the 18th century, and among them the principle of equality. This model had founded the Amirs’ wished socio-political changes all along the 20th century, but ended in an on-going 30-year chaos with ever-renewed adversaries since the 1970’s. As operated in Afghanistan, tribalism and modernity – meant as an ideology, result in opposition prevaling as a social behaviour, which produces fragmentation or destruction and deals with equality demands through group honor. Consequently, traditionalis…
Measuring Excellence and Equity in Education : Conceptual and Methodological Issues
2011
The text focuses on the measurement problems both equity and excellence does imply, and on the "technical" choices that are to be made. It aims at showing that those choices are not neutral and have plenty of political consequences. Starting with the problems of definition of both excellence and equity, which should be considered jointly, the paper examines i) how the indicators and methods implemented do have some impact on the amount of inequalities, and ii) on the necessity of a time dimension to figure out how inequalities are generated, along with a system-wide perspective.
A thermodynamics-based formulation of gradient-dependent plasticity
1998
Abstract A nonlocal thermodynamic theoretical framework is provided as a basis for a consistent formulation of gradient-dependent plasticity in which a scalar internal variable measuring the material isotropic hardening/softening state is the only nonlocal variable. The main concepts of this formulation are: i) the ‘regularization operator’, of differential nature, which governs the relation between the above nonlocal variable and a related local variable (scalar measure of plastic strain) and confers a unified character to the proposed formulation (this transforms into a formulation for nonlocal plasticity if the regularization operator has an integral nature); ii) the ‘nonlocality residua…
A unified residual-based thermodynamic framework for strain gradient theories of plasticity
2011
Abstract A unified thermodynamic framework for gradient plasticity theories in small deformations is provided, which is able to accommodate (almost) all existing strain gradient plasticity theories. The concept of energy residual (the long range power density transferred to the generic particle from the surrounding material and locally spent to sustain some extra plastic power) plays a crucial role. An energy balance principle for the extra plastic power leads to a representation formula of the energy residual in terms of a long range stress, typically of the third order, a macroscopic counterpart of the micro-forces acting on the GNDs (Geometrically Necessary Dislocations). The insulation …
Strain-gradient elastic-plastic material models and assessment of the higher order boundary conditions
2007
Abstract A gradient elastic material model exhibiting gradient kinematic and isotropic hardening is addressed within a thermodynamic framework suitable to cope with nonlocal-type continua. The Clausius–Duhem inequality is used, in conjunction with the concepts of energy residual, insulation condition and locality recovery condition, to derive all the pertinent restrictions upon the constitutive equations, including the PDEs and the related higher order (HO) boundary conditions that govern the gradient material behaviour. Through a suitable limiting procedure, the HO boundary conditions are shown to interpret the action, upon the body's boundary surface, of idealized extra HO constraints cap…
The usefulness of the ICF framework in goal setting for students with autism spectrum disorder
2019
AbstractAn Individualized Education Plan (IEP) is a multi-disciplinary, team-developed plan that is required for a child receiving special education services. IEPs are tools for setting objectives that are responsive to students with special needs. The International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health (ICF) is a hierarchical classification for human functioning and disability developed by the World Health Organization (WHO). The ICF classification can be used as a structural and conceptual instrument in goal setting. In this study the educational IEP objectives of five Finnish students with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) are examined within the ICF framework. The focus is i…
Contents of the Sexual and Reproductive Health Subject in the Undergraduate Nursing Curricula of Spanish Universities, a Cross Sectional Study
2021
Background: Nursing students must receive adequate training in Sexual and Reproductive Health (SRH), which could allow them to acquire sufficient knowledge to solve the future SRH needs of everyone. In this study, the contents of the SRH subject in the undergraduate nursing curricula of 77 Spanish universities were examined to determine what SRH training nursing students are receiving. Methods: The contents of the SRH subject of all the curricula that were available online were reviewed. The distribution of the contents (topics) in the two areas (reproductive health and sexual health) was analyzed, and the prevalence of each topic was established. It was also determined whether there were d…
