Theory of Current-Induced Angular Momentum Transfer Dynamics in Spin-Orbit Coupled Systems.

2020

Motivated by the importance of understanding competing mechanisms to current-induced spin-orbit torque in complex magnets, we develop a unified theory of current-induced spin-orbital coupled dynamics. The theory describes angular momentum transfer between different degrees of freedom in solids, e.g., the electron orbital and spin, the crystal lattice, and the magnetic order parameter. Based on the continuity equations for the spin and orbital angular momenta, we derive equations of motion that relate spin and orbital current fluxes and torques describing the transfer of angular momentum between different degrees of freedom. We then propose a classification scheme for the mechanisms of the c…

One-dimensional quantum-spin—phonon solitons

1983

The quantum dynamics of a compressible harmonic chain of $N$ two-level atoms strongly interacting with the phonons of the lattice is investigated. Two types of mixed excitations are discussed which propagate through the lattice exhibiting solitonic properties. The first type of solitonlike excitation describes the motion of the wall separating two magnetoelastic domains. This transports less energy than the second type of solitonlike excitation which describes the motion of a single spin reversal in the chain. An explicit expression is obtained for the speed of these excitations as a function of an appropriate shape parameter $h$. These results are obtained by approximate self-consistent in…

Berry curvature for magnetoelastic waves

2020

The Berry curvature for magnons in ferromagnetic films gives rise to new phenomena such as thermal Hall effect and a shift of a magnon wave packet at the reflection at the edge of the magnetic film. In this paper, we calculate the Berry curvature of magnetoelastic waves in ferromagnets. In order to calculate the Berry curvature, we first formulate the eigenvalue equation into a Hermitian form from the dynamical equation of motion. We find that the Berry curvature of the magnetoelastic waves shows a peak at the crossing point of the dispersions of magnons and elastic waves, and its peak value is dependent on the hybridization gap at the crossing point. In addition, the behavior of the Berry …

Vortex mutual friction in rotating superfluid 3He

1996

The Manchester rotating cryostat has been used to measure the longitudinal and transverse coefficients of vortex mutual friction in the A and B phases of superfluid 3He. In the B phase the dominant contribution to the mutual friction is scattering of excitations off occupied bound states in the vortex core. The A phase results are explained quantitatively by assuming that doubly quantised continuous vortices are created with a dynamics determined by the equation of motion of the orbital vector I; the measurements enable us to put an upper limit on the orbital inertia of less than 0.01h{stroke} per Cooper pair. History-dependent textural effects which had to be overcome in order to make mean…

Full triples contribution in coupled-cluster and equation-of-motion coupled-cluster methods for atoms and molecules in strong magnetic fields

2020

Coupled-cluster as well as equation-of-motion coupled-cluster methods play an important role whenever high accuracy is warranted. Concerning excitation energies, consideration of triple excitations is typically required to reach an accuracy better than 0.1–0.3 eV. In the context of strong magnetic fields such accuracy is needed for the prediction of spectra of strongly magnetized White Dwarfs. In addition it turns out that in order to correctly model the behavior of energies with respect to the magnetic field strength, triple excitations are required. Due to avoided crossings which are extremely often encountered in the context of strong magnetic fields, double-excitation character can be t…

Non-Hermitian Hamiltonian for a Modulated Jaynes-Cummings Model with PT Symmetry

2015

We consider a two-level system such as a two-level atom, interacting with a cavity field mode in the rotating wave approximation, when the atomic transition frequency or the field mode frequency is periodically driven in time. We show that in both cases, for an appropriate choice of the modulation parameters, the state amplitudes in a generic $n${-}excitation subspace obey the same equations of motion that can be obtained from a \emph{static} non-Hermitian Jaynes-Cummings Hamiltonian with ${\mathcal PT}$ symmetry, that is with an imaginary coupling constant. This gives further support to recent results showing the possible physical interest of ${\mathcal PT}$ symmetric non-Hermitian Hamilto…

Perturbative treatment of spin-orbit-coupling within spin-free exact two-component theory using equation-of-motion coupled-cluster methods.

2018

A scheme is reported for the perturbative calculation of spin-orbit coupling (SOC) within the spin-free exact two-component theory in its one-electron variant (SFX2C-1e) in combination with the equation-of-motion coupled-cluster singles and doubles method. Benchmark calculations of the spin-orbit splittings in 2Π and 2P radicals show that the accurate inclusion of scalar-relativistic effects using the SFX2C-1e scheme extends the applicability of the perturbative treatment of SOC to molecules that contain heavy elements. The contributions from relaxation of the coupled-cluster amplitudes are shown to be relatively small; significant contributions from correlating the inner-core orbitals are …

Chaotization of internal motion of excitons in ultrathin layers by spin–orbit coupling

2018

We show that Rashba spin-orbit coupling (SOC) can generate chaotic behavior of excitons in two-dimensional semiconductor structures. To model this chaos, we study a Kepler system with spin-orbit coupling and numerically obtain a transition to chaos at a sufficiently strong coupling. The chaos emerges since the SOC reduces the number of integrals of motion as compared to the number of degrees of freedom. Dynamically, the dependence of the exciton energy on the spin orientation in the presence of SOC produces an anomalous spin-dependent velocity resulting in chaotic motion. We observe numerically the critical dependence of the dynamics on the initial conditions, where the system can return to…

Quantum Theory of a Radiating Harmonically Bound Charge

2010

A phenomenological Hamiltonian giving the equation of motion of a non relativistic charges that accelerates and radiates is quantized. The theory is applied to the harmonic oscillator. To derive the decay time the physical parameters entering the calculations are obtained from the theory of the hydrogen atom; the agree- ment of the predicted value with the experiments is striking although the mathematics is very simple.

Mechanically Based Nonlocal Euler-Bernoulli Beam Model

2014

AbstractThis paper presents a nonlocal Euler-Bernoulli beam model. It is assumed that the equilibrium of a beam segment is attained because of the classical local stress resultants, along with long-range volume forces and moments exchanged by the beam segment with all the nonadjacent beam segments. Elastic long-range volume forces/moments are considered, built as linearly depending on the product of the volumes of the interacting beam segments and on generalized measures of their relative motion, based on the pure deformation modes of the beam. Attenuation functions governing the space decay of the nonlocal effects are introduced. The motion equations are derived in an integro-differential …
