Structure solution with automated electron diffraction tomography data: different instrumental approaches

2011

Summary Over the past few years automated electron diffraction tomography has become an established technique for structure solution of nano-crystalline material. The intentional choice of an arbitrary tilt axis and thus, the use of nonoriented diffraction patterns (off-zone acquisition) together with fine equidistant sampling of the reciprocal space result in high quality intensity data sets. Coupling automated electron diffraction tomography with electron beam precession (Vincent & Midgley, 1994) enables sampling of intensities between the static slices of reciprocal space and therefore enhances the quality of intensity data further; relatively complex structures have been solved using 3D…

On approximation of a class of stochastic integrals and interpolation

2004

Given a diffusion Y = (Y_{t})_{t \in [0,T]} we give different equivalent conditions so that a stochastic integral has an L 2-approximation rate of n −η, {\rm \eta \in (0,1/2],} if one approximates by integrals over piece-wise constant integrands where equidistant time nets of cardinality n + 1 are used. In particular, we obtain assertions in terms of smoothness properties of g(Y T ) in the sense of Malliavin calculus. After optimizing over non-equidistant time-nets of cardinality n + 1 in case {\rm \eta > 0} , it turns out that one always obtains a rate of n^{ - 1/2}, which is optimal. This applies to all functions g obtained in an appropriate way by the real interpolation method between th…

Cantor-like fractal photonic crystal waveguides

2005

Abstract We propose a new class of one-dimensional (1D) photonic waveguides: the fractal photonic crystal waveguides (FPCWs). These structures are photonic crystal waveguides (PCWs) etched with fratal distribution of grooves such as Cantor bars. The transmission properties of the FPCWs are investigated and compared with those of the conventional 1D PCWs. It is shown that the FPCW transmission spectrum has self-similarity properties associated with the fractal distribution of grooves. Furthermore, FPCWs exhibit sharp localized transmissions peaks that are approximately equidistant inside the photonic band gap.

Collective rotation of an oblate nucleus at very high spin

2019

International audience; A sequence of nine almost equidistant quadrupole transitions is observed in Nd137. The sequence represents an extremely regular rotational band that extends to a spin of about 75/2 and an excitation energy of ≈4.5MeV above yrast. Cranked mean-field calculations of the Nilsson-Strutinsky type suggest an oblate shape for the band. They reproduce the observed I(I+1) dependence of the rotational energy whereas predicting a pronounced decrease in the deformation, which is the hallmark of antimagnetic rotation.

Detuning-induced robustness of a three-state Landau-Zener model against dissipation

2019

A three-state system subjected to a time-dependent Hamiltonian whose bare energies undergo one or more crossings, depending on the relevant parameters, is considered, also taking into account the role of dissipation in the adiabatic following of the Hamiltonian eigenstates. Depending on the fact that the bare energies are equidistant or not, the relevant population transfer turns out to be very sensitive to the environmental interaction or relatively robust. The physical mechanisms on the basis of this behavior are discussed in detail.

Quantitative approximation of certain stochastic integrals

2002

We approximate certain stochastic integrals, typically appearing in Stochastic Finance, by stochastic integrals over integrands, which are path-wise constant within deterministic, but not necessarily equidistant, time intervals. We ask for rates of convergence if the approximation error is considered in L 2 . In particular, we show that by using non-equidistant time nets, in contrast to equidistant time nets, approximation rates can be improved considerably.

Gauss-Type Quadrature Formulae for Parabolic Splines with Equidistant Knots

2010

We construct Gauss, Lobatto, and Radau quadrature formulae associated with the spaces of parabolic splines with equidistant knots. These quadrature formulae are known to be asymptotically optimal in Sobolev spaces W p 3. Sharp estimates for the error constant in W ∞ 3 are given.

Long-Range Order Induced by Intrinsic Repulsion on an Insulating Substrate

2015

An ordered arrangement of molecular stripes with equidistant appearance is formed upon the adsorption of 3-hydroxybenzoic acid onto calcite (10.4) held at room temperature. In a detailed analysis of the next-neighbor stripe distances measured in noncontact atomic force microscopy images at various molecular coverages, we compare the observed stripe arrangement with a random arrangement of noninteracting stripes. The experimentally obtained distance distribution deviates substantially from what is expected for a random distribution of noninteracting stripes, providing direct evidence for the existence of a repulsive interaction between the stripes. At low molecular coverage, where the averag…

Dynamic response of equivalent orthotropic plate model for stiffened plate: numerical-experimental assessment

2017

Abstract Over the last two decades, homogenization-based modeling techniques have attracted considerable attention. In fact, through these methods, structures such as corrugated or stiffened plates, commonly referred to as structurally orthotropic plates, can be approximately studied as equivalent flat plates with orthotropic behavior. Specifically, these homogenization techniques allow for the direct determination of the equivalent flexural and torsional rigidities which appear in the governing equation for the deflection of the equivalent orthotropic plate. It is worth noting that, the determined equivalent material properties retain the dependence on the geometric parameters of the origi…
