Power profiles in multifocal contact lenses with variable multifocal zone

2016

BACKGROUND The power profile of multifocal contact lenses has been demonstrated to report important information that could be used during the fitting process. The aim of this work is to describe the power profile of a recent set of gas permeable multifocal contact lenses as a function of the pupil radius. METHODS The measured multifocal contact lenses have a centre-distance design, and are available with five distance-vision diameters (XS, S, M, L and XL) and two different additions: Type A (up to +2.00 D) and Type B (up to +2.50 D). The optical device NIMO TR1504 (Lambda-X, Nivelles, Belgium) was used to obtain the power profile measurements. The optical lens power distribution as a functi…

Accuracy of magnetic resonance enterography in the preoperative assessment of patients with Crohn's disease of the small bowel

2016

Aim to assess the accuracy of magnetic resonance-enterography in predicting the extension, location and characteristics of the small bowel segments affected by Crohn's disease. Method This is a prospective study including a consecutive series of 38 patients with small bowel Crohn's disease who underwent surgery at a specialized colorectal unit of a tertiary hospital. Preoperative magnetic resonance enterography was performed in all patients, following a homogeneous protocol, within the three months prior to surgery. A thorough exploration of the small bowel was performed during the surgical procedure, using calibration spheres, according to the discretion of the surgeon. The accuracy of mag…

Direct sunlight facility for testing and research in HCPV

2014

A facility for testing different components for HCPV application has been developed in the framework of "Fotovoltaico ad Alta Efficienza" (FAE) project funded by the Sicilian Regional Authority (PO FESR Sicilia 2007/2013 4.1.1.1). The testing facility is equipped with an heliostat providing a wide solar beam inside the lab, an optical bench for mounting and aligning the HCPV components, electronic equipments to characterize the I-V curves of multijunction cells operated up to 2000 suns, a system to circulate a fluid in the heat sink at controlled temperature and flow-rate, a data logging system with sensors to measure temperatures in several locations and fluid pressures at the inlet and ou…

A New Self-Expanding Nitinol Stent (JoStent SelfX) for Palliation of Malignant Biliary Obstruction: a Pilot Study

2004

Background and Study Aims: The JoStent SelfX is a new biliary uncovered self-expanding nitinol stent. The main advantage of this stent in comparison with the gold standard Wallstent is the minimal shortening (< 10%) that occurs during stent deployment. A prospective feasibility study was conducted to evaluate the method of stent implantation and the stent's short-term efficacy. Patients and Methods: Between April 2001 and December 2002, the JoStent SelfX was implanted in 20 patients with inoperable malignant biliary obstructions, mainly caused by pancreatic cancer (12 of 20). All patients underwent sphincterotomy prior to stent insertion. After implantation, laboratory parameters for choles…

Efficacy of protection by latex gloves during orthodontic therapy.

2000

The wearing of gloves during orthodontic or dental treatment is generally indicated for reasons of hygiene and protection against infection. This study was aimed at determining the extent and localization of perforations caused by the various orthodontic treatment techniques and interrupting the infection barrier. The impermeability was tested by means of a water retention test according to European standard EN 455, Part 1, performed on 1600 Centramed (Centramed, Koblenz), Tekmedic and SafeEx non-sterile disposable latex gloves (both by Safe Med, Switzerland) and Safe Gan latex gloves with an additional acrylate coating (also by Safe Med). The perforation rate in unused gloves was between 0…

Dosimetry comparison between TG-43 and Monte Carlo calculations using the Freiburg flap for skin high-dose-rate brachytherapy

2012

Abstract Purpose The purpose of this work was to evaluate whether the delivered dose to the skin surface and at the prescription depth when using a Freiburg flap applicator is in agreement with the one predicted by the treatment planning system (TPS) using the TG-43 dose-calculation formalism. Methods and Materials Monte Carlo (MC) simulations and radiochromic film measurements have been performed to obtain dose distributions with the source located at the center of one of the spheres and between two spheres. Primary and scatter dose contributions were evaluated to understand the role played by the scatter component. A standard treatment plan was generated using MC- and TG-43-based TPS appl…

Towards Efficient Control of Mobile Network-Enabled UAVs

2019

| openaire: EC/H2020/815191/EU//PriMO-5G The efficient control of mobile network-enabled unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) is targeted in this paper. In particular, a downlink scenario is considered, in which control messages are sent to UAVs via cellular base stations (BSs). Unlike terrestrial user equipment (UEs), UAVs perceive a large number of BSs, which can lead to increased interference causing poor or even unacceptable throughput. This paper proposes a framework for efficient control of UAVs. First, a communication model is introduced for flying UAVs taking into account interference, path loss and fast fading. The characteristics of UAVs make such model different compared to traditiona…

Cemented and screw-retained implant-supported single-tooth restorations in the molar mandibular region: A retrospective comparison study after an obs…

2015

Objectives: The aim of this study was to evaluate the survival and compare the appearance of different mechanical and biological complications, in screw-retained and cemented-retained single-tooth implant-supported restorations localized in the molar mandibular region, over a period of 1 to 4 years. Material and Methods: A retrospective study was carried out with a total of eighty implant-supported restorations, which were placed in eighty patients for prosthetic rehabilitation of a mandibular molar. Forty patients were rehabilitated with a cemented-retained restoration and the other forty with a screw-retained restoration. The presence of the following complications was recorded for both t…

Ischemic stroke risk during long-term follow up in patients with successful catheter ablation for atrial fibrillation in Korea

2018

The interruption of oral anticoagulation therapy (OAC) after CA of atrial fibrillation (AF) is controversial. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the relationship between successful long-term outcomes of catheter resection and SR maintenance and ischemic stroke risk in Korea. We studied 1,548 consecutive patients who were followed up for more than 2 years after CA of AF. We investigated the incidence of ischemic stroke during long-term follow-up. Compared to the AF recurrence group (n = 619), the sinus rhythm (SR) maintenance group (n = 929) had more paroxysmal AF (74.6% versus 44.4%, p<0.001), smaller LA size (39.9±5.7mm versus 42.3±6.0mm, p<0.001), and younger age (54.2±10.9 years v…
