We investigated the ability of energy expenditure, movement sensing, and muscle activity to discriminate sedentary and non-sedentary activities in children. Thirty-five 7-11-year-old children participated in the study. Simultaneous assessment of oxygen uptake (VO2), triaxial accelerometry, and thigh muscle electromyography (EMG) were performed during eight different sedentary and non-sedentary activities including lying down, sitting-, standing-, and walking-related activities, which were performed in a random order. Mean values of VO2, accelerometry, and EMG from the concurrent 2 min epochs during each activity were computed. Resting energy expenditure (REE) was measured during 30 min supi…
Cardiorespiratory responses to basic aquatic exercise – A pilot study
2006
This study aimed to examine cardiorespiratory responses to six basic aquatic exercises and to compare the impact of the exercises between healthy females (H group, n=10) and females with diagnosed cardiopulmonary diseases (C group, n=10). The average age of the participants was 52.6(±5.9) years. Each exercise was performed for 3 min. During the exercises, heart rate (HR), oxygen consumption (VO2), blood lactate concentration (BLA), and rate of perceived exertion (RPE) were measured. In each pair of exercises, the latter part was more strenuous than the first. Walking in place was least and cross-country skiing the most strenuous mode of exercise. Energy expenditure (EE) ranged between 2.5±0…
Fundamental movement skills and physical fitness as predictors of physical activity: A 6-year follow-up study
2015
The purpose of this study was to examine the extent to which fundamental movement skills and physical fitness scores assessed in early adolescence predict self-reported physical activity assessed 6 years later. The sample comprised 333 (200 girls, 133 boys; M age = 12.41) students. The effects of previous physical activity, sex, and body mass index (BMI) were controlled in the main analyses. Adolescents’ fundamental movement skills, physical fitness, self-report physical activity, and BMI were collected at baseline, and their self-report energy expenditure (metabolic equivalents: METs) and intensity of physical activity were collected using the International Physical Activity Questionnaire …
Validity of automated refraction after segmented refractive multifocal intraocular lens implantation
2017
Aim To evaluate the clinical utility of automated refraction (AR) and keratometry (KR) compared with subjective or manifest refraction (MR) after cataract or refractive lens exchange surgery with implantation of Lentis Mplus X (Oculentis GmbH) refractive multifocal intraocular lens (IOL). Methods Eighty-six eyes implanted with the Lentis Mplus X multifocal IOL were included. MR was performed in all patients followed by three consecutive AR measurements using the Topcon KR-8000 autorefractor. Assessment of repeatability of consecutive AR before and after dilation with phenylephrine 10%, and comparison of the AR and KR with MR using vector analysis were performed at 3mo follow-up. Results Ana…

A Comparative Analysis of Piotr Borkowski's (1963) and Roman Gajda's (1970) English–Polish Phraseological Dictionaries: Practice vs. Theory
2022
This paper offers an insight into the short and largely unexplored history of English–Polish and Polish–English phraseological lexicography. It aims to analyse two post-war English–Polish phraseological dictionaries, An English–Polish Dictionary of Idioms and Phrases (1963) by Piotr Borkowski and Wybór idiomów angielskich [A Selection of English Idioms] (1970) by Roman Gajda, from a qualitative and quantitative perspective. At first sight, they seem to share several features, insofar as both are monoscopal English–Polish volumes of a similar size; both were addressed to Polish learners of English; and both drew on The Kosciuszko Foundation Dictionary: English–Polish (1959), an exhaustive re…
3D Printing Neuron Equivalent Circuits: An Undergraduate Laboratory Exercise.
2018
The electrical equivalent circuit for a neuron is composed of common electrical components in a configuration that replicates the passive electrical properties and behaviors of the neural membrane. It is a powerful tool used to derive such fundamental neurophysiological equations as the Hodgkin-Huxley equations, and it is also the basis for well-known exercises that help students to model the passive (Ohmic) properties of the neuronal membrane. Unfortunately, as these exercises require basic knowledge of electronics, they are generally not physically conducted in biomedical courses, but remain merely conceptual exercises in a book or simulations on a computer. In such manifestations, they l…
A revision of the structure and stratigraphy of pre-Green Tuff ignimbrites at Pantelleria (Strait of Sicily)
2013
International audience; At Pantelleria, peralkaline silicic magmas were erupted across a range of eruptive typologies and magnitudes: pyroclastic flows, Plinian to strombolian pumice fallout and lava flows. In this paper we focus on the intermediate cycle of eruptive activity which is bracketed by ignimbrite units slightly older than the two caldera collapses which marked the volcanological activity of the island. This age interval (180-85 ka) was punctuated by six ignimbrite-forming eruptions (silicic and variably peralkaline) for a cumulative erupted magma volume of approximately 6 km3 dense rock equivalent. Based on new 40Ar/39Ar (Na,K)-feldspar ages and petrographic data, we propose an …
Embeddings of Danielewski hypersurfaces
2008
In this thesis, we study a class of hypersurfaces in $\mathbb{C}^3$, called \emph{Danielewski hypersurfaces}. This means hypersurfaces $X_{Q,n}$ defined by an equation of the form $x^ny=Q(x,z)$ with $n\in\mathbb{N}_{\geq1}$ and $\deg_z(Q(x,z))\geq2$. We give their complete classification, up to isomorphism, and up to equivalence via an automorphism of $\mathbb{C}^3$. In order to do that, we introduce the notion of standard form and show that every Danielewski hypersurface is isomorphic (by an algorithmic procedure) to a Danielewski hypersurface in standard form. This terminology is relevant since every isomorphism between two standard forms can be extended to an automorphism of the ambiant …
