A Comparative Evaluation of Smear Layer Removal Using Apical Negative Pressure (EndoVac), Sonic Irrigation (EndoActivator) and Er:YAG laser -An In Vi…

2017

Background This study aimed to compare the smear layer removing efficacy of the EndoActivator, EndoVac and Er:YAG laser in extracted mandibular premolars, at the apical, middle and coronal third of root canal, through scanning electron microscopy. Material and methods 40 extracted mandibular premolars were decoronated to a standardized length of 12 mm. Specimens were shaped to ProTaper F4 size and irrigated with 5.25% sodium hypochlorite at 370C between instrumentation. Teeth were divided into four groups (n=10), one control (needle irrigation) and three experimental, according to the irrigant activation technique used i.e. sonic irrigation (EndoActivator), apical negative pressure (EndoVac…

Er:YAG laser giant-pulse generation

2002

Three possibilities of mid-infrared Er:YAG lasers Q-switching were investigated: mechanical and two electro-optical ones. The mechanical method of Q-switching was proved by using of a rotating mirror placed inside the resonator; Pockels or Kerr cells were used for the electro-optical Q-switching. The Pockels cell was constructed on the basis of the Brewster angle cut LiNb03 crystal; the Kerr cell used a ceramic PLZT material. In all the three cases the Er:YAG laser resonator was plan parallel and it consisted of the rear copper mirror and output coupler with 50-70% reflectivity. The Er:YAG crystal was pumped by one xenon flashlamp in a single elliptical silver coated cavity. The generated g…

Effects of an Er : YAG laser and the Vector® ultrasonic system on the biocompatibility of titanium implants in cultures of human osteoblast-like cells

2003

Abstract: The aim of the present study was to investigate the effects of an Er : YAG laser (ERL) and the Vector® ultrasonic system (VS) on the biocompatibility of titanium implants in cultures of human osteoblast-like cells (SAOS-2). One hundred and sixty-eight titanium discs with four different surfaces (sand-blasted and acid-etched, titanium plasma-sprayed, machine-polished, and hydroxyapatite-coated) were used to evaluate cell attachment. The samples were equally and randomly assigned to the following groups: (1) an ERL at an energy level of 100 mJ/pulse and 10 Hz using a special application tip, (2) the VS using carbon fibre tips, or (3) untreated control (C). The discs were placed in c…

Comparative evaluation of the effect of Er:YAG laser and low level laser irradiation combined with CPP-ACPF cream on treatment of enamel caries

2013

Objectives: This study investigated the effectiveness of low power red and infrared lasers and that of Er:YAG laser, in association with CPP-ACPF cream, on remineralization of white spot lesions. Study Design: Fifty intact premolars were immersed in a demineralization solution for 10 weeks to induce caries like lesions and then were divided into five groups. In group 1, the teeth were covered with a CPP-ACPF cream for 3 minutes and then irradiated with a low power red laser (660 nm, 200 mW) for 1 minute through the cream. In group 2, the treatment was the same as that in group 1, but an infrared laser (810 nm, 200 mW) was employed. The specimens in group 3 were irradiated with an Er:YAG las…

Treatment of snoring disorder with a non-ablactive Er:YAG laser dual mode protocol. An interventional study

2020

Background Snoring disorder is a common problem among world population. Treatment modalities may involve surgical and non-surgical procedures. As main objective we proposed to evaluate the efficacy of non-ablative Er:YAG laser in the treatment of snoring disorder. Material and Methods We performed an interventional study in 30 patients with snoring disorders. Three sessions were performed with Er:YAG laser 2940nm in long pulse mode (2J/cm2) and smooth mode (10-8J/cm2) in oropharynx region. We analyzed the efficacy of this protocol using questionnaires for snoring intensity, snoring related characteristics of quality of life (including the Epworth sleepness scale and OHIP-14), the satisfacti…

Healing of intrabony defects following surgical treatment with or without an Er:YAG laser. A pilot study

2004

Aim: The aim of this controlled, parallel design clinical study was to compare the healing of intrabony periodontal defects following treatment with access flap surgery with and without debridement with an Er:YAG laser. Methods: Twenty-three patients each of whom exhibited one deep intrabony defect were randomly treated with either access flap surgery followed by root surface and defect debridement using an Er:YAG laser (KEY3®) (160 mJ, 10 Hz) (test), or with access flap surgery followed by root surface and defect debridement using hand and ultrasonic instruments (control). The following clinical parameters were recorded at baseline and at 6 months: plaque index; gingival index; bleeding on…

Er:YAG laser in defocused mode for scaling of periodontally involved root surfaces: An in vitro pilot study

2005

Item does not contain fulltext BACKGROUND: The Er:YAG laser may be used on periodontally involved teeth in combination with conventional periodontal therapy in order to improve the efficacy of root instrumentation. The aim of this study was to compare the effect of hand instrumentation on root surfaces of periodontally involved teeth with Er:YAG laser application. METHODS: Thirty freshly extracted, non-carious, single-rooted, periodontally diseased human teeth from adult humans with advanced periodontal disease were used in this study. The teeth were divided into three groups of 10 specimens each. Group A was treated with scaling and root planing (SRP) with curets only (control). In group B…

Clinical evaluation of an Er:YAG laser for nonsurgical treatment of peri-implantitis: a pilot study

2004

The aim of this controlled, parallel design clinical study was to compare the effectiveness of an Er:YAG laser (ERL) to that of mechanical debridement using plastic curettes and antiseptic therapy for nonsurgical treatment of peri-implantitis. Twenty patients with moderate to advanced peri-implantitis lesions were randomly treated with either (1) an ERL using a cone-shaped glass fiber tip at an energy setting of 100 mJ/pulse and 10 pps (ERL), or (2) mechanical debridement using plastic curettes and antiseptic therapy with chlorhexidine digluconate (0.2%) (C). The following clinical parameters were measured at baseline, 3 and 6 months after treatment by one blinded and calibrated examiner: P…

In vitro evaluation of the biocompatibility of contaminated implant surfaces treated with an Er : YAG laser and an air powder system

2004

Abstract: Titanium platelets with a sand-blasted and acid-etched surface were coated with bovine serum albumin and incubated with a suspension of Porphyromonas gingivalis (ATCC 33277). Four groups with a total of 48 specimens were formed. Laser irradiation of the specimens (n=12) was performed on a computer-controlled XY translation stage at pulse energy 60 mJ and frequency 10 pps. Twelve specimens were treated with an air powder system. After the respective treatment, human gingival fibroblasts were incubated on the specimens. The proliferation rate was determined by means of fluorescence activity of a redox indicator (Alamar Blue® Assay) which is reduced by metabolic activity related to c…
