Computer vision and machine learning can be used to automate various tasks in cancer diagnostic and detection. If an attacker can manipulate the automated processing, the results can be devastating and in the worst case lead to wrong diagnosis and treatment. The step of expert taxa recognition currently slows down the response time of many bioassessments. Shifting to quicker and cheaper state-of-the-art machine learning approaches is still met with expert scepticism towards the ability and logic of machines. In our study, we investigate both the differences in accuracy and in the identification logic of taxonomic experts and machines. Thresholding projection estimators in functional linear models

We consider the problem of estimating the regression function in functional linear regression models by proposing a new type of projection estimators which combine dimension reduction and thresholding. The introduction of a threshold rule allows to get consistency under broad assumptions as well as minimax rates of convergence under additional regularity hypotheses. We also consider the particular case of Sobolev spaces generated by the trigonometric basis which permits to get easily mean squared error of prediction as well as estimators of the derivatives of the regression function. We prove these estimators are minimax and rates of convergence are given for some particular cases.

Surrogate outcomes and transportability

Identification of causal effects is one of the most fundamental tasks of causal inference. We consider an identifiability problem where some experimental and observational data are available but neither data alone is sufficient for the identification of the causal effect of interest. Instead of the outcome of interest, surrogate outcomes are measured in the experiments. This problem is a generalization of identifiability using surrogate experiments and we label it as surrogate outcome identifiability. We show that the concept of transportability provides a sufficient criteria for determining surrogate outcome identifiability for a large class of queries.

Domain-specific transfer learning in the automated scoring of tumor-stroma ratio from histopathological images of colorectal cancer

Tumor-stroma ratio (TSR) is a prognostic factor for many types of solid tumors. In this study, we propose a method for automated estimation of TSR from histopathological images of colorectal cancer. The method is based on convolutional neural networks which were trained to classify colorectal cancer tissue in hematoxylin-eosin stained samples into three classes: stroma, tumor and other. The models were trained using a data set that consists of 1343 whole slide images. Nuorten aikuisten verkkoyhteisöpalvelujen mobiilikäyttö

Tutkielmassa pyrittiin kuvaamaan ja ymmärtämään kuinka suomalaiset nuoret aikuiset käyttävät verkkoyhteisöpalveluja mobiilisti, ja millaisia tekijöitä käytön taustalla on. Tutkimuksen lähestymistavaksi valittiin käyttötarkoitustutkimus. Tutkimus suoritettiin määrällisenä tutkimuksena ja siinä käytettiin kyselylomaketta, johon pystyi vastaamaan verkossa. Tutkimuksen otantamenetelmä oli erityisesti tätä tutkimusta varten kehitetty verkko-otanta. Kyselyyn saatiin 265 vastausta, joista analyysiin otettiin rajauksen jälkeen 154. This chapter examines the influence of online consumer discussions on Facebook on purchase intention and word of mouth (WOM). Specifically, it attempts to determine whether Facebook discussions are perceived as credible and how these discussions are linked with behavioural intentions. The first part of this chapter presents a research model linking seven constructs. In the second part, we tested the research model and hypotheses with a sample of 151 consumers from one Facebook group for children’s shoe recommendations. Tässä puheviestinnän pro gradu -tutkielmassa tarkasteltiin yhteiskunnallista aktiivisuutta kuntapoliittisessa Facebook-ryhmässä. Tutkielman tavoitteena oli kuvata ja ymmärtää ajankohtaisen ja aktiivisen kansalaisosallistumisen teknologisen muodon, kuntapoliittisen Facebook-ryhmän vuorovaikutuksen ominaispiirteitä. Tavoitteeseen pyrittiin kysymällä kuntapoliittisen Facebook-ryhmän jäseniltä, minkä takia vuorovaikutukseen osallistutaan ja miten. Tämä tutkielma tarkastelee pääosin naisten muodostamaa Livejournal-yhteisöä, jonka kieli on englanti ja keskustelun aihe jalkapallo. Pyrin selvittämään, miten yhteisön jäsenet käsittelevät perinteisesti miehiseksi miellettyä diskurssia. Tämä selviää tutkimalla yhteisön puheenaiheiden eli topiikkien sisältöä vuonna 2010. Topiikkeja ja yhteisön käyttäjäprofiilia tutkimalla pyrin myös selvittämään, voiko yhteisön puheenaiheita tai itse yhteisöä kuvailla sukupuolittuneiksi. Urheilun on laajalti osoitettu olevan epätasa-arvoisia valtakonstruktioita ylläpitävä voima. Lisätutkimukselle on siis selkeää tarvetta. Omani kaltaisia tutkimuksia ei myöskään ole aikaisemmin tehty.
